Its not mandatory. If you want to buy stuff off the PSN you can just buy PSN cards through Amazon and then turn around and use them instantly on the PSN.

i was a psn plus user.. im really not too worried about it.. the card i used was a check card.. yes it's tied to my bank and i could easily just get a new one.. i was planning to get a new one anyway because this one has a dent in it lol
