Okay, people ask me this question every day. So I am gonna say it once for all of you.
Men's College Volleyball is unlike any other collegiate sport. There are very few D1 teams. As a result, most college volleyball for men is club. It is a real sport. We are funded by the school, sponsored by Mizuno, and get stuff through Adidas. Out of the 30 or so D1 teams in the nation, only an average of 4 players per team are on full scholarship. I was recruited by U of A, Sac State, Fresno state, USD, Texas (club team, i think thats all they have anyways), and some other schools. Club teams do recruit. They can get you into the school on that sport alone, regardless of what some people think.
I met with my the head coach of USD my senior year of HS. I flew down to SD, practiced with the team, and got a feel for collegiate volleyball. Instead of trying to play for a D1 team on the other side of the nation (because the D1 teams in Cali are the best in the nation such as UCLA, Long Beach, and Pepperdine), I decided club would be better for me.
The main reason why my school has not converted our team to D1 mens volleyball is because of le 9. We need to add another woman's team to our school to make room for volleyball. However there is nothing to add. As a result of this, we cannot make it official. However mens club volleyball is actually more popular than NCAA volleyball in terms of amount of teams. We travel all over Southern Cali, go to Vegas for a tourney, and end the year in Kansas City for Nationals. There are around 300 or so college mens clubs teams. My school placed 33rd this past year. What makes that so amazing (our placing) is that we were the only school in the top 50 teams to place that had under 15,000 undergrads. Our school has about 5000 students.
My team is actually funded 99.99% by the school. The only fee we have is insurance costs (40 dollars a semester). They provide us with airfaire, warm up jerseys, practice shirts, warmup jackets/pants, a home and away jersey, Mizuno shorts, and a variety of other things.
In an attempt to gain more interest in Men's volleyball at our school, the boosters actually DO help pay for tuition. It might not be a D1 athletic scholarship but they can still help out. They dont like to announce this in the open because club teams generally do NOT offer scholarships. But with the generousity of these people, students, like myself who couldnt afford the tuition, now can attend. I see our school becoming a D1 mens volleyball team in the next 4 to 5 years. They have been trying to do it now for a while actually.
My volleyball team gets treated no differently than any other sport at my school. We are close with the woman's team (who finished 9th in the nation this past year) and actually have played them in a game before (we won of course).
Does that clear everything up for you all?
It is the school team you idiot.
