Yup. And I'm not an etymologist, but my guess would be that potatoe was actually the original spelling and that it was then cut down to potato out of convenience. But the spelling was never considered incorrect at the time of Quayle's "gaffe." If anything this just makes liberals look bad for not caring that they tout ignorance as if it's truth.
IIRC, that was the explanation I received in school, too.

Liberals have no need for truth, just false narratives.
They were chump long before chump ever got here.

Well, spelling is much different than pronunciation. My post was just a possible explanation of why it would be spelled like potatoe - not that that spelling is correct in current day English - maybe in old/middle English - not even that far back - maybe three hundred years ago?

But that's not what I said was fake. I said it was fake that so many try to pretend Quayle misspelled the word. That doesn't bother you? Cos at the end of the day it's just about getting hit point, not being fair minded.
    It sure bothers you.

I think his trying to throw the school under the bus for his up probably makes him a bad person.

Either he was truly stupid or was too dependent on scripts to be respected. Take your pick.

Try the eighties. NYT used the spelling in a 1988 article.

And it was a good explanation, btw.

Potato - phonetically would be po as in pot, ta as in tap, to as in top.

    More fake narratives.

He was the moderator. He was getting the kid to spell the word as written on the card. Having good intentions doesn't make one a bad person. Obviously, you're a steaming pile of (aka a bad person) in your own right though.

    so mad.

He was so desperate to follow the script he couldn't even trust himself.

If he actually knew that in the first place -- I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

According to my dad, English is very difficult to learn - unlike Chinese which doesn't have tenses, little grammar - but no alphabet, and those tones are the same to my tone-deaf ears. English: I read. I read (pronounced "red" as in the past). He can't tell the difference.

He didn't err in making the thread.

So, your contention is that Dan Quayle was merely being a bully?
