SALT LAKE CITY (July 14, 2006) – In game two of the first day of the Rocky Mountain Revue, Pavel Podkolzin took over the floor presence at 7-5. The large crowd was awed by the size of the big man from Russia. Podkolzin started hot with an early dunk and a couple of very strong rebounding efforts.
Pops Mensah-Bonsu and Darius Washington were also fan favorites coming into the Revue as very recognizable college names out of George Washington and Memphis respectably.
For San Antonio, Andre Brown, had 10 points in the first half, while Louisville grad Taquan Dean added five in the first half in front of a nearly sold out crowd at the Lifetime Activities Center at Salt Lake Community College.
The scoring in the first half was very spread out for the Mavericks, who led at the half, 33-29. Of the nine players that got playing time in the first half, seven of them scored. Rawle Marshall led the way with eight points going only 3-for-10 from the field.
As the second half started, the Spurs made a run to tie the game early thanks to a big quarter from Melvin Saunders who had 6 points.
The offense picked up for both teams in the third quarter, and surprisingly the Spurs led the points in the paint 34-24 despite the overwhelming size advantage for the Mavs. Podkolzin was held scoreless in the quarter, largely due to the outstanding physical play by the Spurs’ big men, Ian Mahinmi and Rich Melzer.
As the game went on, both teams turned to their transition games. Through a lot of up and down action in the third and fourth quarters, it grew apparent that both teams were rusty going into the summer league.
Late in the fourth, the Spurs pulled away as the Mavericks grew tired and missed open shots. Despite the sloppiness late, Dallas still has a chance with 40 seconds left as two free throws by Marshall pulled the game to within three points after being down as many as 8 a few minutes earlier. However, a strong sequence for Melzer which included a 12-foot jumper and a huge blocked shot on the other end of the court ended all hope for Dallas.
Saunders led all scorers with 23 points for San Antonio on 11 of 16 from the floor. Andre Brown added 16 points to help lead the Spurs to the 79-71 victory. Rawle Marshall had 20 points in a losing effort for the Mavericks.
Former West Virginia standout, Kevin Pittsnogle, did not dress in the game for the Spurs. No reason was given by Spurs officials for Pittsnogle’s absence from the lineup.
[Maybe because he's on the Mavericks' roster.]
SALT LAKE CITY (July 14, 2006) - In game one of the Reebok Rocky Mountain Revue, things started very slowly as players and coaches got to know each other throughout the first quarter for both the Seattle Sonics and the Philadelphia 76ers.
Seattle’s first round pick, Mouhamed Sene, made his presence known early in the game at Salt Lake Community College on Friday scoring the first five points for Seattle and blocking two shots within the first minute of the game. Sene played only six minutes in the first quarter and scored seven points.
The Sonics ended the quarter with a 12 point lead behind Noel Felix’s 11 points and a suffocating defense. Seattle continued its strong defensive performance in the second quarter as the 76ers took four minutes to score its first points of the quarter.
The first half ended after 24 minutes of very physical basketball with 30 total free throws attempted. Both teams combined for 26 turnovers (13 each) in the half.
The 76ers made some good half-time adjustments to the intense Seattle defense and scored the first 11 points of the second half and took their first lead of the game three minutes into the third quarter at 51-49.
At the end of the third quarter, the game was tied at 60 after the Sonics only managed to score 11 points.
The 76ers began to pull away in the fourth quarter as they took Sene and Felix out of the game. Sene was held scoreless in the last three quarters of the game. Felix began to get hot late in the fourth but Seattle couldn’t make a stop as the fourth quarter went on.
Philadelphia’s Shavlik Randolph proved to be too much for the Seattle defense that had been so stout in the first half. Randolph ended the game with 25 points in the game, 15 of which came in the second half. The 76ers strong finish led them to the 88-74 win.
Felix finished the game with 19 points and Keith Langford added 15 points for the Sonics. Philadelphia had four players in double-digits and spread the scoring between nine different players.![]()

I'm so proud of him.
However, a strong sequence for Melzer which included a 12-foot jumper and a huge blocked shot on the other end of the court ended all hope for Dallas.
Melzer with not a bad game. 4/8 fg, 6rbs, 4 ast, 1 foul, 1 stl, 0 pf, 3 blks, 9 pts.
Maybe there really is something there.
Hmm ... Noel's over the phone Spurs box score wasn't that inaccurate for the conditions.
Brown, Melzer and JSmith all pretty solid.
I was just about to comment on melzer..Who knows, maybe the guy can actually contribute!!
Who did Richard Belzer get the huge block on?
is with their point guards? They're better off running Andre Emmett at the point -- and I'd never run Andre Emmett at the point.
They need to page Marques Perry.
Reading waaaaaaaaaay too much into it, but what stands out for Melzer is 0 TOs, 1 foul. Means he's latched onto the pace very well.
Brian told me that huge block near the end of the game was JSmith's block, not Melzer. Or maybe there were two. I don't know who they were on.
When do they play again??
I thought both Gansey and Pittsnogle were on the heat's rosters.
Was the opposition sucking out there or was his effort legit. Are there any highlights of the game available. I'll check up on nba.com
Tomorrow at 4pm central they play the Sonics.
I talked to three people who saw the Mavs-Spurs game and they said it was just an ugly game in the first half (outside ABrown) but in the second, the Spurs team started to get it together. Melvin obviously had a huge second half.

Just looked at Melzer's measurements.
Dude is long....
It'll be nice to take an extended look at him.
is melzer the one that has the 7 foot 2 inch wing span?
Does Ian look like he has put a little weight ?? Hard to tell from pic, but does look thicker
