I do have something like that. Last year I got a barebone kit and everything. I had to put it together. My friend helped me put it together. Do I have to update my ? lol. No right, because I have service pack 2 or what ever.

there have been hundreds of updates to windows since then. that's why he asked if you have run windows update. XP service pack 2 was basically a collection of updates and drivers released since service pack 1. you would want to keep windows updated so you don't have problems with newer hacks and virii.

Well I have service pack two and run windows update. I know I've mentioned have service pack 2 before.

Virus protection software sometimes interferes with Setup,do that now.

Pressing R will only get you the recovery consol. If you want to boot of the disk to reinstall Windows you have to change your boot sequence (the way I posted earlier). It sure sounds like the HD is dying. Slave it to another computer, save your data, and try reinstalling windows after reformatting.
