Mayor Bloomberg said the two dead on the plane were instructor and pilot.
http://wcbstv.com/topstories/local_story_284145842.html"The whole plane has a parachute on it," Lidle said. "Ninety-nine percent of pilots that go up never have engine failure, and the 1 percent that do usually land it. But if you're up in the air and something goes wrong, you pull that parachute, and the whole plane goes down slowly."
Interesting twist...
Mayor Bloomberg said the two dead on the plane were instructor and pilot.
NYM-STL might get postponed (rain and Lidle).
FAA reports on Lidle's plane.

Medical examiner confirms it was Lidle, NYC officials (Bloomberg) will not say Lidle as next of kin has not been notified (also an instructor on the plane).
Agent confirms:
Lidle reportedly killed in plane crash

NEW YORK -- Yankees pitcher Cory Lidle was the pilot of a small plane that crashed into a high-rise apartment building in Manhattan on Wednesday, according to published reports.
Lidle, 34, was killed in the crash, the reports said.
Four deaths were confirmed by the city medical examiner's office, CNN reported.
Yankees manager Joe Torre told CNN that the plane that was a Cirrus SR-20 registered to Lidle.
A New York City Fire Department spokeswoman, Emily Rahimi, told The Associated Press that the aircraft struck the 20th floor of the 50-story building, at 524 E. 72nd St., on the east side of Manhattan.
Lidle, whose team was eliminated Saturday in the Division Series by the Detroit Tigers, had told reporters he planned to fly home today.
Federal Aviation Administration records showed the single-engine plane was registered to Lidle, and FBI reports show that Lidle's passport was found at the scene, according to a report on ESPN.com.
Lidle's agent, Jordan Feagan, told Newsday he was told by the Yankees that Lidle was among the fatalities of the 2:30 p.m. crash.
"He wasn't just my client. He was probably my closest friend," Feagan said.

Damn JB, who needs to read any news websites when they can just read your updates all day? This is way easier then CNN.com, just click refresh and you have a new part of the story.
Hey, tomorrow I'm going to be interested in the weather in the Corpus area, I want all day coverage on it too.
Sad day for baseball. Prayers to his family and friends.

Cory Lidle dies
Just got off the phone with Cory's agent, Jordan Feagan, who had just heard from the Yankees that Cory was in fact on the plane that crashed in Manhattan today. He was breaking up, understandably, having worked with Cory for about a decade. "He just wasn't my client. Probably my closest friend." He then asked to leave the phone call because he had to get in touch with Cory's wife. So sad, so sad.
Why would they postpone the NLCS game because of this?
And I know it's drizzling in NY as we speak...
True (and I'm not saying you're doing it wrong), but there are other families to think of today, too.
how old was his kid?
Mayday call issued before crash.
UNCONFIRMED RUMOR
I've heard both 6 and 7.
Seven.
No more reports that son was on the plane. New reports (including Mayor Bloomberg's conference) say second on plane was instructor.
I didn't realize Lidle was a replacement player.
I'm pretty sure an earlier article said it was a twin engine plane. The Cirrus is a single.
Correct. FAA report confirms.
It gets even worse. He was only VFR rated and wasn't instrument qualified. No way he should have been flying in that overcast.

Least-appropriately named eyewitness in the history of television
I wonder if the other people that got hurt and the people that own the appartments will sue for damages since he was not qualified to even fly
Her name tells the story.
I echo those sentiments. Horrible.

I know nothing about flying. So, wouldn't having his instructor on-board allow him to fly in that weather?
