    Don't forget James White!
As good as James White could be with regular PT, he's being blocked pretty heavily by Barry and Fin....those two are far less likely to lose their rotation spots than a guy like Elson, IMO. I'm certainly for it, but it's just not realistic...

Caveat: Both could be gone before long if Fin opts out and/or Barry is traded, which would theoretically create the opportunity for White to step in....we'll see.

I second the James Posey nomination. A long defender who can hit the three and doesn't need the ball in his hands. He'd be a perfect Spur. He also is coming off a huge contract in Memphis/Miami so he may be affordable. The downside is that he's already got a ring, so he might not be willing to take less money for a shot at a championship. He also had some at ude problems somewhere along the line, IIRC.

Still, I'm guessing that Finley, Horry, Vaughn and Oberto all come back, and probably Bonner too. Between the draft picks and all the guys stashed in Europe, there isn't much room on the roster.

The Bulls have 2 players that would be good additions - Nocioni is obvious, but P.J. Brown would be a solid backup big man. There will be a lot of interest in Nocioni, and he will likely be too expensive.

Brown is one of those timeless guys, sort of like Kevin Willis. He could still contribute some good minutes, and he hits the boards well, which the Spurs could use. He is also an intelligent guy, and well-liked in the locker room. He would add to the chemistry the Spurs have, rather than distracting from it. I think he will be a lot more affordable than he was a few years ago, when we tried to get him.

Unrestricted Jamal Magloire at reserve PF or C. I always liked that guys game. Rebounds well, can block a few shots, and he has that quiet kind of meanness and nasty at ude towards the opponents.

20 mins a game from him would be nice. Horry and Bonner for the high post PF and Jamal for inside playing PF.

    Lets go get him.

I'm much more in favor of PJ Brown, who is as professional and solid as they come than a guy like Magliore who has had character questions in the recent past.

Having said that, the Spurs are stacked at the F/C positions...so much so that a consistently dominant Euroleaguer like Luis Scola will have trouble even coming over, let alone getting minutes.

IMO, free agency should be focused elsewhere, if at all, this year.

If we get another big man, it should be a cheap project shotblocker.

Who was that kid in the D-League that you were touting last year? The shotblocking big that was starting to garner praise? Somebody like that might be a worthwhile venture.

How about Bonzi Wells? I know they have enough 2's but if Finley or Vaughn leave. You never know. I like Barnes and Pietrus. Don't think they'll leave GS however.

Bonzi Wells is bad for team chemistry. He's a headache to all his former coaches, he's no gym rat and he destroys team chemistry and positive vibes among his teammates.

I remember another young swingman who spent most of his first season in San Antonio on IR...

James White has gone through the initiation. Next season is his.

White looked pretty good this season when he was pressed into action. Granted it was brief, but he showed a solid basic grasp of Spurs basketball. Better than what Elson showed, that's for certain.

I'd be stunned if White was a third as good as Stephen Jackson is at his best.

But of course, I am stunnable.

We have to many losses after next year. Bowen, Horry, Vagyn, Finley, We absolutly have to work in some PT for whoever their replacements are.
Bonner D is suspect, 50-50 to stay
Butler apparently next impressed pop 100% GONE
Ely in the same catagory as Butler 75% gone
Horry. Wish he would retire a champ, need the space. 15% gone
White, Definitly will be back in training camp, but will he make rosteR? 20% gone
Finley, one for the road, I hope White can take some of h is min this year if he makes team.
    Beno,,,,110% gone...pops doghouse
Barry....to much talk with him .......either way, will be useful as a player or trade bait.

Who to bring in??? since im thinking for the future, im t hinking of guys who can be worked in slowly, aka
    MAtt Barnes
    White
    Herman,,,long shot
mydyess would be great, but not likely
Grant, love the guy, but dam,,another old vet?

BTW...how much cap space to we have anyway???????? This should be kinda important with what were talking about.

I'm positive the backups at every position (except PG possibly) will see a lot of burn in the regular season next year. Pop knows the need to keep TD, Manu, Parker, Horry, Finley, and Bowen fresh for the PO. He did it this year and will again next year. The Spurs will be around 53 to 58 wins again with another hard ass charge to a le.

That said, the 6-11 guys better be ready to get some serious PT.

You can only activate 12 players, and guys 6-11 have mostly been set (Finley, Barry, Elson, Horry, Vaughn, and Bonner on occasion).

If the games are somewhat compe ive, Pop is only going to use a 10-man rotation at most. Here's how I see it fleshing out...

    PG Parker/"Draft PG"/Vaughn
    SG Ginobili/Finley/Barry
    SF Bowen/White/"FA or Draft G/F"
    PF Duncan/Horry/Butler
    C Oberto/Elson/"FA or Draft F/C"

If it follows last year's pattern...three PGs, four G/Fs, and five F/C will be active for each game. So if Bonner leaves then Butler presumably takes his spot on the bench...but there won't be many minutes for him there.

It could be that Pop occasionally decides to make one of the F/Cs inactive in favor of a G/F like White (both essentially taking the 06-07 Bonner spot)...but I wouldn't count on that player getting much time, unless it's a blowout.

So I seriously wouldn't get my hopes up about guys like White, Butler or any prospective draftee/free agent not playing PG getting significant burn.

If Barry is traded, Finley opts out, Oberto opts out, and/or Butler can manage to beat out Elson for backup Center, then you'll see any of the young guys getting a bunch of PT, but until then.....
