Kurt Cobain was so good that any 14 year old picking up a guitar for the first time can learn to play ALL nirvana songs within one month.

I apologise for the list, it was late at night here, and i just did a quick google search for 'top 100' guitar players and the first one that came up said 'Rolling Stone Magazine', i said cool - they know a little about music...

Should have looked at it a bit harder.

Glad to see Joe Satriani get mentioned, he's incredible.
    Where's Robin Trower?

Others I like that have been mentioned...Duane Allman, died so young, I think his best work was still to come.
Mark Knopfler, all of his work, but "The Princess Bride" soundtrack is especially beautiful.
Carlos Santana, heart, just full of heart.

    Brian May (from Queen.)
Mike Campbell (Tom Petty), may not be the best but he's got sweet licks.
    Johnny Winter could play.

Fun thread...I'll come back as I think of more.

I think Mike Campbell is pretty damned underrated because of the huge shadow that Tom Petty casts.

Jimi Hendrix (November 27, 1942 – September 18, 1970) was an American guitarist, singer and songwriter. Hendrix is considered one of the greatest and most influential guitarists in rock music history.[1] After initial success in England, he achieved worldwide fame following his 1967 performance at the Monterey Pop Festival. Later, Hendrix headlined the iconic 1969 Woodstock Festival.

Jimi Hendrix helped pioneer the technique of guitar feedback with overdriven amplifiers, incorporating into his music what was previously an undesirable sound. He built upon the innovations and influences of blues stylists such as B.B. King, Muddy Waters, Albert King, and T-Bone Walker, and derived style from rhythm and blues and soul guitarists Curtis Mayfield, Steve Cropper, and Cornell Dupree, as well as from traditional jazz. Part of Hendrix's flamboyant stage persona may have been inspired by rock pioneer Little Richard, with whom he toured as part of Richard's back-up band, "The Upsetters." Hendrix is also widely thought to be influenced by Pete Townshend of The Who, who performed in London when Hendrix started his career there in 1966. Carlos Santana has also suggested that Hendrix's music may have been influenced by his Native American heritage.[2]

From Wikipedia. Dude was amazing. Plus he played left handed!

Buckethead is a great guitarist, Slash is one that comes to mind for me since I grew up in the 90s, along with Eddie Van Halen

I'm not some guitar aficionado but can somebody tell me, why is Jimi Hendrix usually thought to be a legendary guitarist? He was active publicly for only like 5 years, but hes usually considered one of the best, I would think people would look for longevity too, for example Eddie VH or even Joe Perry.

I know you're probably sick of hearing this, but Eddie is really only great a tapping. Buckethead can honestly do it all, lol

And, why is so much made about Jimmy playing left handed???

    He was a lefty.
It's not like he was right handed man who decided to play lefty one day.

He started out using a RIGHT handed guitar, but held it left handed.

    The Stone's list is strange.

    Joan Jett???

Where the &*^$! is Stevie R. Vaughn???

I've always liked the work of Ric Emmett (both during, and since, Triumph); chops and style.

And I love a good shredder as much as the next guy (or even more), but for pure mastery of the instrument, Grant Geisman is pretty tough to beat.

Yeah I've never really agreed with their guitar list.

Have you ever heard "While My Guitar Gently Sleeps"?

George Harrison was a great guitarist.

Chet Atkins is also a pretty damned good guitarist.
I mentioned last week that I heard his guitar cover of "Imagine" and I was blown away.

Lol clapton played the guitar on while my guitar gently sleeps :P

Why is that? He is one of the best acoustic guitar players that I have ever heard. I do not think they are taking about electric guitar only, right?

Yeah, no. Any kinda guitar. Classical, flamenco, plectrum, anything else you can think of lol.

I dunno though, I've never really thought of georgy has a great guitarist.

Sorry but I just can't consider any of the Beatles great musicians; vocalists, maybe and poets, yes. I like Beatles music very much.

I completely agree, and i'm one of the biggest beatles fans out there. I give ringo credit for being able to adjust to all the different types of music lennon and mccartney were throwing at him though.
