Canadians cancel U.S. business trips amid tariff anger and border fear

    ...
Acosta is not alone. Across the country, Canadians are cancelling business trips, withdrawing from conferences and avoiding future bookings to the U.S. as the backlash against President Donald Trump hits the world of corporate travel.

At Flight Centre Travel Group Canada, trips by air between the two countries declined by close to 40 per cent year-over-year in February amid a surge of nixed plans, said managing director Chris Lynes. Business bookings have decreased 10 per cent.

“We definitely had an immediate influx of cancellations for conferences that were meant to be in the U.S.,” he said, adding that scrapped bookings reached “fever pitch” two months ago.

“People had a lot of angst over travel down to the States because of the anger toward the U.S. government.”

Companies that pulled the plug — despite potential penalties or lost deposits — span sectors ranging from banking and insurance to manufacturing.

“One of the banking customers we had cancelled six programs to the U.S.,” said Lynes. Destinations included New York, Dallas and Washington, D.C., and especially Las Vegas.

American Jews speak out against antisemitism being used pretextually to deny others civil rights and due process

A coalition of Jewish groups warns that the Trump administration is making Jews less safe by targeting international students who protested Israel's war in Gaza and the universities where they study.

In a statement released Tuesday, the coalition of 10 groups brought together by the nonpartisan Jewish Council for Public Affairs states that antisemitism is on the rise in the "public discourse, politics, and ins ution," but that it opposes the Trump administration's push to strip pro-Palestinian student activists of their visas and deny them due process.

"Our safety as Jews has always been tied to the rule of law, to the safety of others, to the strength of civil society, and to the protection of rights and liberties for all," reads the statement. The coalition includes reform, conservative and reconstructionist organizations, as well as HIAS, as a non-profit immigrant aid group founded by Jewish Americans.

As DOJ argues that federal courts have no authority to order "any particular acts of diplomacy," I want to remind everyone that SCOTUS let Matthew Kacsmaryk seize control of Biden's border policy for 10 months and micromanage diplomatic negotiations with Mexican officials. slate.com/news-and-pol...

    Liz Dye article

The Justice Department has argued that the eventual reversal of the TRO functions as a retroactive permission slip for them to defy it. But that is simply not the law. Under what’s known as the “collateral bar rule,” if you deliberately defy a court order, you cannot later assert that the order you defied was illegal as a defense to contempt of court.

    As Judge Boasberg pointed out:

If Defendants believed — correctly or not — that the Order encroached upon the President’s Article II powers, they had two options: they could seek judicial review of the injunction but not disobey it, or they could disobey it but forfeit any right to raise their legal argument as a defense against criminal-contempt charges. They chose the latter course

U.S.-born man from Georgia held for ICE under Florida’s new anti-immigration law

    ...
Leon County Judge LaShawn Riggans held Lopez-Gomez’s birth certificate up to the light after community advocate Silvia Alba silently waved the do ent in the courtroom.

“In looking at it, and feeling it, and holding it up to the light, the court can clearly see the watermark to show that this is indeed an authentic do ent,” Riggans said.

Based on her inspection of his birth certificate and Social Security card, Riggans said she found no probable cause for the charge. However, the state prosecutor insisted the court lacked jurisdiction over Lopez-Gomez’s release because U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement had formally asked the jail to hold him.

“This court does not have any jurisdiction other than what I’ve already done,” Riggans said.

remarkably free of legalese, this 4th Circuit order is frankly addressed to a broader public and posterity too

not sure I've ever seen anything like it

UNITED STATES COURT OF APPEALS FOR THE FOURTH CIRCUIT
    No. 25-1404 (8:25-cv-00951-PX)

KILMAR ARMANDO ABREGO GARCIA; JENNIFER STEFANIA VASQUEZ SURA; A.A.V., a minor, by and through his next friend and mother, Jennifer Vasquez Sura, Plaintiffs – Appellees,

v.KRISTI NOEM; TODD LYONS; KENNETH GENALO; NIKITA BAKER; PAMELA JO BONDI; MARCO RUBIO, Defendants – Appellants.
Now the branches come too close to grinding irrevocably against one another in a conflict that promises to diminish both. This is a losing proposition all around. The Judiciary will lose much from the constant intimations of its illegitimacy, to which by dent of custom and detachment we can only sparingly reply. The Executive will lose much from a public perception of its lawlessness and all of its attendant contagions. The Executive may succeed for a time in weakening the courts, but over time history will script the tragic gap between what was and all that might have been, and law in time will sign its epitaph.

It is, as we have noted, all too possible to see in this case an incipient crisis, but it may present an opportunity as well. We yet cling to the hope that it is not naïve to believe our good brethren in the Executive Branch perceive the rule of law as vital to the American ethos. This case presents their unique chance to vindicate that value and to summon the best that is within us while there is still time.

    O R D E R

WILKINSON, Circuit Judge, with whom KING and THACKER, Circuit Judges, join: Upon review of the government’s motion, the court denies the motion for an emergency stay pending appeal and for a writ of mandamus. The relief the government is requesting is both extraordinary and premature. While we fully respect the Executive’s robust assertion of its Article II powers, we shall not micromanage the efforts of a fine district judge attempting to implement the Supreme Court’s recent decision.
