i really didn't care for the valve versions of TFC. the original team fortress is what got me into playing games online. i used to stay up waaay too late on 24k modem playing it while a freshman at UT.
Valve quit using the Q2 engine when Source was released, but at no point before that. The Q2 engine was used in HL and all expansions, CS 1.6 (retail) and TFC.

Gawd damn, on Ebay I just got Guitar Hero II and TWO guitars for 72 bucks!
enigma, did you ever play action half life? that was a kick ass mod. dual desert eagles, sawed off shotguns, and you could leap like 10 feet while shooting in midair.
The rocket launcher is a semi-automatic high-ordinance weapon. We have nothing like it today and if we did it would be impossibly heavy to carry. I am not saying it detracts from the game -- merely that it is unrealistic. To say nothing of the other weapons in the game.
And well, so what about the engine? Bioshock is running on the Unreal Engine 3, would you like to assert that due to that fact they look or even play the same? Be reasonable. Stating that a game has the same engine to bolster their similarities is a statement without validity or precedent, unless they are carbon copies/blatant ripoffs of each other. That's not the case here.
As for the tactics, again, so what? They're both FPS games. Skills are always going to generalize to some degree. Could I say that Quake 3 and GRAW (Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter for the curious) are the same games because you have to aim at another person? Precision control with the mouse is a must for ALL decent FPS games. Nearly all of them employ strafing and prescience of where your opponent will be before you fire, based upon your own judgment as well.
Respawning in and of itself speaks volumes about the differences between the two games. In Counterstrike, you get one life per round. That's it. You make a mistake and remove yourself from the team for the rest of the round. They can't rely on a war of attrition until reinforcements arrive via respawning. There are no weapon respawns in CS -- what you buy, you go with, unless you pick up a felled opponents weapon.
Lastly, the very fact that some guns have to be removed or deactivated during teamplay reveals that Quake is simply not as balanced. Very few, if any, CS tournaments place any similar restrictions on a weapon, unless they are playing a pistol themed variant and so forth. It's meant to be realistic -- this is why an AWP is nearly always preferred over some of the weaker guns such as the glock, ump, and mac-10.

no, it simply means you have played very little quake and have no idea how it is played, especially in a compe ive scenario. the BFG was a single player weapon. you were probably weaned on cs, and you prefer it, which is fine. also, we're talking about mods here - weapons are always added and removed from teamplay mods vs the original game. how many of the half life weapons are in cs? quake was highly evolved as a high level compe ive game before valve existed. i happen to think cs is one of the most boring mods there is, mostly because i started playing deathmatch games like doom and quake. and if you think quake 3 blows, you're pretty much right - the first two were way better. for me, it was better than the alternatives.

better late than never...u quickly find yourself trying to perfect every song. but hurry up cuz GH III is about to come out
I've been playing Dynasty Warriors 4 on my PS2 for about three days now. Gearing myself up for when I get my 360 and Dynasty Warriors: Gundam for Christmas. Screenshots of that alone were enough to make me have a /m/echagasm. Turn A Turn.
My god you pwned that auction.
anyway, since cry havoc and i derailed the topic:
cry havoc, how is the zelda game for the Wii? the only game i have played on it was Wii sports tennis, which was incredibly fun. i heard it's great, but haven't heard anything from anyone who actually played it.
I actually already have the game for PS2 and 360...but no guitar. I'm gonna end selling the game back on Ebay.
Hmm that makes sense, thanks. I wish the ending was longer though.
Yeah it was two auctions, one was the guitar only which I got for $34, then I promptly got the guitar and game for 38 bucks!
And to think I almost won an auction 2 days ago for a guitar for $55; thank god I didn't.
Zelda is amazing. It's one of the most beautiful games I've ever played.
It might not have the technical prowess that Bioshock or Crysis does, but it's an experience all it's own. It's right up there with the best Zelda's I've played.
I just picked up Resident Evil 4 for the Wii as well, which is also one of the best games I've ever played.
Man, the Wii is really starting to bring out the big guns. Metroid Prime 3, RE4 (re-release), Super Paper Mario, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros. Brawl... Manhunt 2 looks very promising, Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles, Guitar Hero 3...... as well as all the past Gamecube games I still need to buy.
metroid prime 1 and 2 were awesome. i want to play 3, but my daughter would probably wreck a Wii if i got one. might have to hold off a bit longer.
Speaaaaking of hardcore tactical shooters, I'm looking to pick one up (for PC). Is Rainbow Six Vegas the best right now? Judging from the reviews it's the one I want.... but GRAW 2 looks pretty good too.
I like Rainbow 6 Vegas better but that's just me.
Hmm I played RB6 Vega for PC and GRAW for 360. They're both really good, Vegas is more of a urban/building setting and GRAW2 is more outside. I liked the weapons a little more in GRAW2 (The gun camera!).
Is anybody thinking of picking up gate London? Looks like a sweet game but I'm a little confused about it, is it an MMORPG or just a RPG game
It's being listed an an "Action Role-playing game".
gate is something I will buy, but I have kept up with it extensively and grow more and more disappointed in its direction.
It would seem most games start as very hardcore experiences and slip into mediocracy once the devs find out that the common gamer hasnt the attention span nor the taste for anything truly different.
gate is shaping up to be just another shooter with RPG elements. Its not a sprawling, living world...its a linear storyline that takes you from place to place in confined quarters and no freedom.
Agreed. Twilight Princess is/was excellent. After I had completed about 75-80% of the game I read that it was originally developed for the GameCube but was revised to Wii format.
In that, the graphics are GameCube's. I am highly anticipating the follow-up.
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption is awesome. But sadly, with the release of BioShock and my never-ending addiction to Warhammer 40k: Dark Crusade, I have yet to finish it.
Bumping this thread.
World in Conflict earned a 9.5 today from Gamespot, the highest rating they have given any game since WoW and GTA: San Andreas.
Looks amazing.
My favorite trailer is here:

NBA 2k8 looks promising (as always) and the demo is available on xbox live in a few hours.
I wasnt all that thrilled with the demo, but I trust Gamespot's ratings (most of the time).
WoW is such a ty excuse for an mmorpg.
Bunch of carebears.
gate looked great before they released the game play trailers. No thanks.
