I think he is just finally getting the calls, tbh.

I get what you're saying, but I think it's deliberate this year. As you said, he always drew some contact, but last year his priority was to get the shot away. This year his priority is to get the whistle. He's even pushing on screeners and stuff when he's outside his shooting area, which indicates that he's just taking advantage of every opportunity to get a cheap one.
