Denmark thinks Sweden sucks so badly they still ban Swedes from coming into their country.

Denmark has also now twice made an exception of its neighbor, first opening up to tourists from all the other Nordic countries, but leaving Sweden out, and then last week opening up to tourists from most EU countries, and again excluding Sweden.

The justification is that Sweden — which unlike Denmark did not close schools, bars, restaurants, cafes, shopping malls, or sports clubs when the pandemic hit — has a much higher number of people testing positive for COVID-19.

In its most recent assessment, Denmark's infectious diseases agency, SSI, judged that on average 67 people in Sweden had tested positive for coronavirus per 100,000 inhabitants in the preceding week.

That's a long way from the 20 person per 100,000 threshold Denmark wants countries to be below before their citizens enter the country for leisure purposes.

The Danish and Swedish economies have been similarly affected by the COVID-19 crisis, despite the different strategies of both countries to face the coronavirus: Denmark was one of the first in closing and opening social and economic life; Sweden opted for a soft tactic.

The latest forecasts made by the European Commission (EC) place both countries among those least affected by the pandemic and estimate that while the Danish Gross Domestic Product (GDP) will fall by 5.2%, the Swedish will do so by 5 , 3%, compared to 8.3% on average for the entire European Union (EU).

Unlike most of Europe, Sweden chose not to close schools, bars, restaurants, or shops, although it imposed restrictions, allowing it a minimum rise of one tenth in its GDP in the first quarter.

Denmark, although it did not confine its population nor did any Nordic country, closed borders, ins utions and commerce in mid-March, when it had barely counted one death, and was one of the pioneers in initiating a slow and progressive reopening a month later.

The Danish economy fell 1.9% between January and March, and consumption fell 29% from the beginning of March to the beginning of April, compared to the same period in 2019, compared to 25% in Sweden, according to a study of the University of Copenhagen from data on credit card operations.

But the trend has reversed in the following months, coinciding with the progressive reopening of Danish society: in June, while in Denmark consumption was almost at the level of last year, in Sweden it remained 7% below, according to an analysis of Nordea, the largest Scandinavian bank.

The gap is greater with Norway and Finland, where operations rose 6% year-on-year, and can be understood by the Swedish exceptionality: while its neighbors have reduced infections to a minimum, Sweden still registers about 30 deaths per day and has a death rate by COVID-19 far superior.

The explanation for the gap between the two neighbors, both with open economies in which the merchandise sold abroad accounts for more than half of their GDP, lies in the nature of their exports, rather than in national economic measures

".....Across the North Sea, however, Sweden continued to pursue an approach with the potential to achieve herd immunity — though the government never stated it as a goal. Swedish authorities recommended taking precautions at an individual level and banned gatherings of more than 50 people, but the nation stopped short of ordering restaurants and bars closed. In April, the Swedish ambassador boasted that Stockholm might achieve herd immunity by the end of May.

That never happened, Sridhar says. "Sweden is stuck at 6% for months now," she says, in reference to the percentage of residents who have antibodies to the coronavirus. Meanwhile, the country has suffered economic devastation and far higher death rates than its Nordic neighbors.

The main reason herd immunity hasn't been achieved, she suspects, is that to get there, many millions of Swedes would have to catch COVID-19. That could happen in the abstract, but in reality, most individuals deliberately try their hardest to avoid contracting the disease. "Nobody wants to be part of the herd," she says...."
