The GOP Ends Its One-Party Rule In Shambles
The government is literally shut down as Republicans get ready to hand over the House to Democrats.
Former Rep. David Jolly (R-Fla.), who left Congress in 2017 and recently gave up his party affiliation, said the Republican Party’s unified control of government was
“defined by remarkably damaging wins and complete capitulation of separation of powers.”"Congress spent two years behaving as a political committee of the president,
not a branch of government empowered with independence by the Cons ution."
ACA turned out to be far more popular than they anticipated and repealing it was far harderthan expected
as well ― despite controlling both chambers of Congress.
Congress’ biggest legislative accomplishment was passing the new tax law, but it fell far short of what was promised.
There were deep, permanent cuts for corporations, and a more modest cut for individuals that expires at the end of 2025.
The tax bill was not as popular as Republicans expected, and they largely abandoned it as a campaign message.

Mnuchin's statement to ease fears about something very few people were worried about (liquidity) seems not to have calmed the market.
DJIA down another point and a half, S&P 500 close to bear market territory.
(Zero Hedge has been ringing the alarm bell on liquidity, but that's consistent with their permabear, hard money bias. I keep the whole shaker of salt handy to keep the Devil off my shoulder.)
He's being called a moron, etc domestically and internationally, for his totally unnecessary, moronic call, from Cabo, to ask BigFinance if everything is OK
Trash is blaming Powell and had to be told that he can't fire Powell![]()
Trump has good reason to be upset with the Fed: $340M in variable interest loans he reportedly holds.
DJIA down 2.3% for the day so far, down 9% for the last six trading days.
trump a month ago "its a good time to shut down the government"
trump now "mean democrats shutting down the government"
It’s not even disingenuous at this point. He’s a toddler, should be handled like one.
But he's not doing awesome.
He's all alone....
guess we should lock the thread
Mnuchin and his awesome-inspiring "Plunge Protection Team"
whew, with the stock market down 15%+ from 1 Jan 18, I was worried, but thank Mnuchin,
we are In Good Hands
Democratic senator reveals that
Republicans in Congress privately believe Trump is ‘nuts’
Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) said that when she’s been alone with
Senate Republicans, they’ve intimated that the president is unfit to serve.
“Now they’ll tell you, if it’s just the two of you,
‘The guy is nuts,
he doesn’t have a grasp of the issues,
he’s making rash decisions,
he’s not listening to people who know the subject matter,'”
McCaskill told CNN.
“But in public if they go after him …
they know they get a primary, iow, their own cushy job is more important than USA
and they know that’s tough.”
“It’s kind of weird to me,” McCaskill said.
“I don’t know what happened with Lindsey.”

What's really sad is that Mnuchin is not a financial dummy. He knows what he's doing but he can't stop Trump's behavior.
he knows, being a swampy Capitalist, financial predation and vulture capitalism,
but I really doubt he knows how to run the Treasury, and certainly Do The Right Things if any serious crisis arrives.
He was the one who recommended the current fed chair who is doing exactly what he should be doing despite Trump's criticism.
Melania Returns to White House for Christmas After Trump’s ‘All Alone (Poor Me)’ Tweet
Trump also took great pains to show he was working on the holiday,
tweeting out a picture of himself working in the Oval Office and
a second tweet talking about giving out a contract for his border wall in Texas.

total fraud
I bet she's in a great mood, too

MNUCHIN’S ATTEMPT TO SOOTHE THE MARKETS BACKFIRES SPECTACULARLY
The Treasury Secretary, who’s been described by various former Goldman Sachs colleagues as
unmemorable and not as smart as Gary Cohn, and by a former White House staffer as
“a political novice who doesn’t have the substantive background to do the job he’s being asked to do,”
decided that with the markets in free-fall, it was his duty to
call up the nation‘s six largest banks and yell “Don’t panic!” into the phone.
Then, he decided to tell the world about the contents of those phone calls via Twitter,
letting everyone know they can breathe easy
about a problem no one was worried about until Mnuchin brought it up:
Mnuchin looked to quash big-bank worries
over plunging stock markets and
reports that President Donald Trump might move on his Federal Reserve chief
by assuring the financial community on Sunday that market liquidity is in good shape.
Some market participants, however, questioned
why Mnuchin answered a question that no one was asking.
Even after recent market losses, a liquidity squeeze or fresh financial crisis hadn’t been on the market’s mind.
Mnuchin’s assertion of ample liquidity risked raising doubts.
Even with U.S. stock markets on the skids for weeks, and the federal government in a partial shutdown since Saturday,
many market-watchers wondered whether there’s something more systemic going on.
“My initial instinct is this isn’t necessarily a positive thing, because it portrays that there’s worries that
there is a bigger, broader issue
than what I think is just typical re-positioning toward the end of the year,”
“Mnuchin isn’t helping,” she said. “For him to come out and explain what Trump is expressing is bizarre. It adds to the nervousness.”
