Woo hoo...finally some Spurs action...thanks a bunch, SDC!
Few things:
1) I know it's early, but Tim looked a little slow. With that lack of speed, I could see some trouble scoring inside against length. Hopefully he loosens up a bit as the season goes on.
2) I would have liked to see the defensive intensity upped. If this is supposed to be the Spurs getting back to defense first (Pop telling guys if they want to play, it starts on that end), then I would like to see more defensive intensity. I watched the Heat's scrimmage and they were d'ing people up...
The more I watch the more RJ sucks.
Agreed. Especially the new guys fighting for a spot in the team. Kinda disappointed with that, although it's early and we'll see if it gets any better in the upcoming pre-season games against actual opposition.
Tim did look slow. I didn't watch every min. but I didn't see him try too much on offense.
As for Rj I think it was too much pressure.
I was hoping to see more focus and effort from RJ, but still the same nonchalant type of game.
You can see the defensive potential of Gist and Gee.
I'm not going to be able to watch the video until later as I gotta go to work soon, but I really do like the possibilities with Gist especially on the defensive end. What do you think from what you've seen in the scrimmage vid so far? Can he guard mobile 4s for spot minutes?
Also, where did you watch the Heat scrimmage? Is it on their site?
Thanks spursdotcom.
I don't worry too much about the defensive intensity in scrimmage games like this. While you'd obviously like to see guys defending, trying to go all out on defense is only going to make it more likely for a guy to go down with a senseless injury.
We obviously need the defense to show up at some point, but I wouldn't mind terribly if that doesn't happen until the season starts.
I watched the Heat scrimmage on NBATV.
As far as my opinion of Gist, I do think he could have some success in spot minutes as an energy defensive big. Obviously, its hard to tell anything conclusive from just 1 scrimmage, but from everything I have seen (limited SL up close, videos of other games) his energy and defense is noticeable.
I don't think he can be a SF in terms of all around game, but I think he is pretty damn quick and would not do a bad job of switching off onto smaller players. He is extremely active and he goes for the boards. I will have to see more, but if we are just looking at defense, I think he could be an asset (no one is going to shut down guys like Dirk or Pau, but as far as regular season change ups go, Gist can probably do a decent job defensively imo).
I don't really mind his gambling either. It might not fit entirely into the Spurs defensive schemes, but I like that he takes some chances and of course he has shown he can block some shots.
I'm just comparing it to the Heat. That team is deathly serious about winning. Wade was getting hit, Lebron was getting hit, they were going all out on defense for the most part. It was physical. It is just a mentality; something I would like to see from the Spurs.
Just watched the scrimmage. I know it's not even preseason yet but I'm worried RJ is still going to suck. He didn't look good at all.
well everything was good besides his jump shot but that will come along look at ginobili he airballed a shot and made some bad passes..it will come back after a while it's not like r.j. missed the shots bad he only had that one ball at the end but more becuase of tired legs you can tell, and at the same time he has never been a jump shooter, but he did look aggressive going to the basket and was great in the open court, and knocking down his free throws, and played solid defense
thank you for this
Comparing RJ to Manu is bordering on blasphemy, but I hear what you're saying. I hope all the work RJ put in this summer pays off. I will remain in the cautiously optimistic camp.
