Yep, it's possible that Spurs knew Utah would claim Thomas before they waived him. For Spurs, it made the move easier because they knew they wouldn't have to pay his remaining salary.

As soon as teams (NBA and dleague!) figured out that Mal could shoot the 3, they ran him off the line, and his percentages plummeted.
