if trimming the population was their motive to "shoot down" the plane, as you put it, then it doesn't make much difference when there were only 130 something s on board, imho. s could've just sent some tanks to the crowded urban streets and killed more people without wasting no missiles. Population is in proportion to tax income so the huge population is an advantage to the s government rather than a disadvantage, tbh.

It's just the new trailer for Godzilla! The Chinese wouldn't need incentive if it were an accident--what if they couldn't (or, another military) track it because its radar or location indicator no longer worked and communication was down? Then they'd probably fire if the threat was misconceived.

the plane would've sent out distress signals either way, unless there was a bomb inside the plane which blew it up instantly so the crew had no time to let out any signals. Not to say that the US radars/satellites have always been keeping a close eye on the s' military forces including all their missile launchers & air bases, and if the s had launched a ballistic missile those South Eastern Asian countries would've all drenched their pants before the missile hit the plane tbh.
