The Hillary Clinton Email Saga: Still No There There
As Steve Benen points out, Clinton isn't the first Secretary of State to use a personal email account:
Politico published this report in March: "Like Hillary Clinton, former Secretary of State Colin Powell also used a personal email account during his tenure at the State Department, an aide confirmed in a statement."....MSNBC’s Alex Seitz-Wald added at the time: "....Powell, who served from 2001-2005, apparently did not keep a record of personal emails, unlike Clinton."
As best as I can tell, no one ever cared about the Republican secretary of state using a personal email account. It was, to borrow a phrase, a non-story.
Jeb Bush also used a personal account when he was governor of Florida. And he held onto those emails for seven years before he finally made them public. What's more, it's clear that, like Clinton, he decided which emails to release and which to hold back. "Gov. Bush does not have a plan to release his personal e-mails not related to state business," an aide said in March. That sounds awfully similar to what Clinton has said about her email archive.
Nobody cares about Powell because he's not running for president. Nobody cares about Jeb Bush because....actually, I'm not sure why nobody cares about Bush. The governor of Florida doesn't handle classified intel, but if that were the big difference then Powell would be under scrutiny too.

Like Watergate, the issue will not come down to the burglary/private email server. The issue will be the cover up.
There were apparently top secret emails on the server that were apparently scrubbed of their top secret designation before they were turned over. Specifically (released so far) there were satellite images from the NSA which are ALL classified top secret on the server where the top secret designation had apparently been changed. Now that the FBI has the server some very smart guys will be figuring out what was erased and deleted from the server and who did it.
Even Boutons favorite source, (DailyKos) is worried...
If anyone can shovel right-wing bull while giving it a shiny journalism-like luster, it's Ron Fournier. He's so, so sad about the world of hurt he and his ilk are getting ready to drop on Hillary Clinton for her use of a private email server while she was Secretary of State:

—She will give the FBI a private, illicit server that housed her official email during her four years as secretary of State, including thousands that she covertly deleted.
—Her attorney will give agents a thumb drive containing copies of the self-selected emails she returned to the State Department after discovery of the rogue server.
—A top intelligence official reviewing just a handful of those emails told Congress that top-secret information had been contained in two emails that passed across the server.
Aside from the fact that there was nothing illicit about having such a server and that it would be up to the SOS what to save or delete of her emails in any case, a pithy summary of the latest revelations.
Now Hillary may or may not be in trouble over whether some retroactively classified material ended up among her emails. It may be a case of bureaucratic infighting over control of classification of information in her archived emails. It may be a more serious case of careless handling by her of classified information. Whatever it is, it's a problem she created for herself by taking on responsibility for properly protecting that information, when she could have left it in the hands of the State Department.
But what really struck me about Fournier's take on it is his barely restrained glee about what this will give her enemies -- potentially a trove of data they can troll through endlessly, spinning out controversies and scandals and fantastic conspiracy theories without end:
If the FBI is able to recover deleted email from her server, it's almost certain that more classified do ents will be discovered (given what has already been found in the tiny sample size). That would raise more questions about her judgment.
Furthermore, a thorough autopsy of the deleted email might lead to details about other embarrassing topics, such as Benghazi (a GOP fetish), or the intersection of Clinton Foundation donors and State Department business ("Follow the money," a Democrat close to Clinton told me in March). Though this is pure speculation, her closest allies worry about what might be found.
If the deleted emails can't be recovered, Clinton will never be able to clear her name.
Did you get that? Even if there's nothing there, she'll still never be able to clear her name.
Look, I know the right-wing propaganda-meisters will always conjure up something to keep their Clinton scandal factory pumping away at full steam, no matter what. But this is relatively fresh BS, far more tasty for the reading and viewing public than those old and tired scandals cooked up during the Clinton White House years.
I want multiple strong Democratic candidates competing with each other to offer the best policies and the best political strategies to bring them to reality.
But I just wonder, how can any primary or GE candidate hope to run successfully with this kind of tornado shaping up around them?
I really am appalled. Sanders is a terrific guy, but we all have to know he's a long-shot. I don't want a President Trump. Even writing those last two words makes me feel unwell.

Anyone who doesn't see this as a major blow to Hilliary is being dilusional. I admit, while she's better than any GOP candidate for sure, my support for her is diminishing due to simply not connecting with me and millions of others. Her refusing to answer questions, the server issue and her basically seeming a little shady is hurting her. Hurting her badly. She needs to get on the Sunday morning talk shows and get her message out there. I truly don't see Bernie winning a general election. If Hillary continues this current downward trend I look for Joe to enter the race. Yeah, he puts his foot in his mouth from time to time but he is highly admired by democrats and even by many in Congress.

If any average citizen were to have done what Hillary is accused of, they would immediately have all security clearances stripped during the investigation. I really really hope this brings her down.
