Six months ago, North Korea was almost totally isolated. Their only ally was China, which imposed intermittent pressure to keep a lid on the nuclear program. Kim Jong Un desperately wanted recognition as a major world leader, which he got when Mr. One Page Briefing jumped at an offer of a meeting.
AND THEN TRUMP BRAGGED ABOUT IT! As if he’d been a super genius, as opposed to an illiterate dupe.
Trump gave NK exactly what it wanted from the get go: equal footing with a superpower.
NK was never going to go to a meeting, and it bait and switched Trump like the chump he is.

His decision to cancel the meeting, after recent indications that the North Koreans were making a fool of him, had come to seem almost inevitable. And almost everything else about the president’s approach to, ostensibly, the biggest foreign policy challenge of his tenure has appeared uninformed, ill-considered and potentially disastrous.

If America has no short-term objective short of that—and Mr Trump did not obviously have one—there would be little to discuss.
Given the naivety Mr Trump has demonstrated, that is perhaps for the best.
