You and "fromwaydowntown" may want to talk. "And that back problem was pretty minor. David never missed any playoff games because of on-going back problems after 1996-97. Really." Wow this is sad...
Yeah, it was difficult to express sarcasm in my post. I wasn't saying that David never missed any games. I was mocking your mindless point by acknowledging that David missed many playoff games after 1996-97, and that those missed games were the result of a back problem.

    Sarcasm, fool, sarcasm.

Furthermore, I fail to see how the Spurs managed to tank considering that the last thing the league would want is another top 5 player to end up in a small market, especially with a team that had an uncertain future. The league has their own docs who looked into DRob's injury and then there was the unconvenient fact (for you) that the team had insured DRob's contract so the insurers had their docs look at his injuries too.

Now do you want to continue to look like a moron?

Any franchise would have tanked that season safe in the knowledge that if it didn't get Tim Duncan, it could have Tony Battie as the big man of the future.

Let's also not forget that in the 1996-97 season the Spurs also had Charles Smith out for 51 games. I guess he was faking his bone on bone knee.

He's in a time warp, FWD. He can't be expected to know what happened from 1998-2003...

In a couple of years he'll come back to warn us of Duncan's inevitable departure to Orlando.

They'd also go 5-5 in the last 10 games in order to secure the worst record in the league.

Arguably, Charles Smith sitting out games did more to aid the Spurs in winning games than in tanking that season. I think Smith was genuinely hurt. Otherwise, Pop would have played him to further the conspiracy.

Jaime Feick was a bright spot in that season. That was how great things were going for the Spurs.

DA was who they wanted in that draft until they won the lottery.

Actually, they were 2-8 in the last 10 of that season.

That you can't vividly remember the Spurs' record in the last 10 games of a season that ended almost a decade ago is, I think, clear evidence that we're lying to cover up Pop's conspiracy and that Pop tanked that season. (note to Amare's Fluffer: that was sarcasm).

Perhaps it was the 10 before that. I recall them starting to win a few of their games towards the end of the season and being quite concerned about how that would hurt their lottery chances.

From the end of March through early April, they did have a 4-4 stretch:

    69 1997-03-25 SAS CLE W 64-59 17-52 Won 1
    70 1997-03-27 SAS ORL W 97-93 18-52 Won 2
    71 1997-03-29 SAS UTA L 102-115 18-53 Lost 1
    72 1997-04-02 SAS DET L 92-99 18-54 Lost 2
    +--+----------+---+----+---+-------+-----+------+
Gm Date Tm Opp W/L Score W-L Streak
    +--+----------+---+----+---+-------+-----+------+
    73 1997-04-04 SAS @LAL W 94-83 19-54 Won 1
    74 1997-04-05 SAS @GSW L 103-120 19-55 Lost 1
    75 1997-04-07 SAS @UTA L 93-116 19-56 Lost 2
    76 1997-04-08 SAS DEN W 96-90 20-56 Won 1

But, obviously, that was to throw people off the scent of the real conspiracy. Who would believe a conspiracy if you didn't at least step up and beat a 56 win team on the road at some point?

Anyone remember how the Spurs went into Houston early that season, at about full strength, IIRC, and smoked the Rockets? That was Barkley's 1st season with the Rockets and it was quite enjoyable to see the Spurs destroy the team that was supposed to win the West. Wilkins put up like 20 off the bench. I know for a long while I was hoping for health that season after that display.

I used to take my sister to the games when the Spurs would be playing the Rockets...she went to Samuel Clemens High School, where Robert Reid graduated, and he was still with the Rockets (it was before he went nuts).
Robert Reid went crazy? I never heard about that.
