One thing I have to recommend strongly when you're out there: go to Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio. It's the greatest theme park I've ever been to (even better than Magic Mountain). They have some of the most amazing roller-coasters in the world, and they're always adding new ones. Looks like it's only about a 120 mile drive from Ann Arbor, but it'd be worth it if it was 5 times as long a drive.

One of the things that we noticed when checking it out on maps was how close to a LOT of cities it was. Michigan, Toronto, Cleveland, Indianapolis, Detroit, Milwaukee to name a few. Considering we drive to other cities in Texas its amazing to be able to drive to so many different places like that and have it be a shorter trip than from here to Dallas.

Out of all of the cities you've mentioned the only one you should checkout is Toronto,

Milwaukee has beer? Yay but Canada has much better stronger beer, Indianapolis sucks, Cleveland sucks, Detroit does have some cool stuff to see and do but I wouldn't waste a drive to Cleveland or Milwaukee or Indianapolis.

Chicago is cool has a cool music scene and plenty of great restaurants.

A few cool things to do in Michigan

    Big Bear Sand Dunes
Manitou Island (great for camping 10-15 miles out from mainland)
    Mackinaw Island
    Traverse City Cherry Blossom Festival
Tipup Town Winter Ice Festival in Houghton Lake

If you are into hunting you will be a happy camper.

Also don't forget to pack your prozac.

Good luck in Michigan you two..

Manny...in the summer you can go to Warren Dunes beach. And there are casinos.

Jekka...there are probably some museums for Native American Art in the Upper Michigan Area, as that are was pretty heavily populated by the Chippewa/Anishinabe Indians in Pre Colonial times...My ex-wife got her Masters in Upper Michigan and she said in one of her classes they would go out hiking and find all sorts of arrowheads and things like that.

You can see the Aurora in Upper Michigan as well...

I personally never lived in Michigan but I did live in Indiana one summer and went all over Michigan on the weekends. Never actually went to Detroit though...the areas of it that I saw were pretty cool...IMO, Texas is better though. And I like SA better than any of the big cities I saw there(mainly Grand Rapids and Lansing).

Good luck and I hope you two have a good time there.

Oh yeah...Manny, never ever ever ever eat Mexican Food or Chicken Fried Steak in the US outside of Texas. I think you can sometimes get lucky with Mexican food in Cali...but that's about it. I have never had good chickenfried steak outside of Texas. In fact I'd say the chicken fried steak I've eaten outside of Texas is some of the nastiest food I've ever had. You are right to be worried....tread carefully.

Do not trust non-Texans if they tell you they know a good Mexican Food Restaurant or where to get good Chicken Fried Steak...they don't know what they are talking about 99% of the time. They literally don't know any better...

LOL... that's true. In all my years in Cali, most of the places I've found to be comparable to SA Mexican food are all in Mexico.

That's the area my mom's family is located. I spent lots of summer hours at Cedar Point as a kid; it's the best place for roller coasters. While you're there, you can do the ferry to Put-In-Bay for good restaurants, drinks, grown up fun.

yeah Put-In-bay is great you should definitely go there. During the last weekend of July they have Christmas in July where they decorate like Christmas and all the bars throw Christmas parties. Put in Bay is basically just a island where people tie up their big boats off of lake Erie and go get drunk for the weekend.

Thanks! One of my Native American/American Studies profs lectured at Michigan for several years - we got a whole lot of teaching on that area, and it's definitely something I'll be looking into. My prof also suggested going to Hartwick Pines as it's one of the only preserved virgin pine forests in Michigan, like how it looked before the loggers got there.

I have a book on Ojibwe/Anishinaabe culture and casinos called Rez Road Follies that I'll make Manny read before we get up there.

Problem solved - my friend is teaching me her recipe for chicken fried steak before I leave. Her boyfriend practically had a foodgasm just talking about it, so I trust that it's good.

don't be afraid of winter. Believe me, you have never felt more alive than walking outside at 7:30 in the morning when its 12 degrees, 30mph winds and you are scraping the sheet of ice off your car. You will grow to appreciate every second of Summer while you start on your way in a freezing car you desperately hope will warm up already.
