Very bizarre. I don't understand the rationale from the standpoint of the university. Unless it's like a "weed-out" course for people in a particular major, and they're looking for any reason to give people a lower grade.

Fascinating turn of events.
Poseur.
At least for us, it showed a type of dedication for the subject. Even if the class was a lot like CF described, the professor may recognize that the student is there on a regular basis and have a better relationship with that student then the student who may show up to a class every few weeks for a test review or a test. But, this was all at a school that had an average class size of 14 and the biggest class was 51.
Funt's lesson for the day:
When it gets windy here, the WHOLE DAMN CITY loses DSL for almost a full day.
No. It's just laziness. It's making an arbitrary attendance policy the reason to attend, rather than an engaging connection with the material being taught.
If you want to have participation in the class with the instructor part of the grade, then do that. That's valid. But mandatory attendance is just stupid.
College are stupid.
Man, I think I would have had to drop out of college if attendance was mandatory.
There were only a handful that had it at MSU(500-600 students per class) and I still worked around it. I'd just buy my roommate lunch/beers at the bar and he'd swipe my ID card. Problem solved.
I rarely, if ever, went to class. There were a few where I only went to the 1st class and then again for mid-terms/finals and that was it. I just bought the lecture notes.
I don't mind going to class -- in fact I WANT to go to class -- I just want to feel like I'm learning something when I'm there.
It's was a waste. Most of my lectures were based on the reading.
Why do both?
The lectures were bad, but group/team projects were the ing worst.
And I don't disagree. I only had a handful of classes that you've described that just seem pointless to go to. There always seemed to be incentives attached to attendance for us, extra points, days off, pushing things back, etc. if we went to class.
That's the point -- the extra points and incentives can kiss my ass. I prefer the type of class where attendance isn't mandatory, but there's still enough going on that you can't afford/don't want to miss it.
I'd like to be challenged, which seems to be a rarity.
Why am I on a Talking Heads kick right now?
Absolutely and I understand. I liked the environment of class, the people, the professors, getting there, seeing people on the way there... all that stuff. The actual class could kiss my ass most of the time.
Waiting for Asbheeighs Ass troll..
talking heads is good but you are still lame
Which head are you talking about?
I'll make a note of that when I start caring what you think about me.
David Byrne, probably.
no, make a note of it now
I can't. I don't give a what you think of me yet.
