It sounds like Palin failed to mention it. And because McCain failed to vet her, or even send a minion up to Alaska to poke around, it was news to them.

Story was, the Palin clan flew down to Arizona on Friday to meet the McCains right before the announcement. McCain had already offered her the spot over the phone.

Basically, he wants his daughters to use protection when/if they make the mistake of having sex at such a young age. AKA, he's for sex education and protection and not the "save yourself til marriage" stuff. You see, he's realistic and also smart to tell them to use protection.
