The overwhelming majority of firearms in America are never used in a crime.

On the other hand, firearms in the hands of law-abiding citizens stop crimes over 2 million times a year in the United States. Most of the time, the mere presentation of the firearm is enough to stop the crime without any shots being fired.

There are, literally, millions of firearms in circulation in this country. You aren't putting the toothpaste back in the tube.

And the people saying a gun ban will only harm the law-abiding are absolutely right. There are so many firearms around that criminals who want one WILL be able to get one, gun ban or not.

You'll end up with a country where the only people with firearms are the exact people that shouldn't have one. If an Eric Harris or a George Sodini or a Cho want a gun, they'll get one regardless of whatever law you put up.

It'll be just like Prohibition or drug laws, except worse.

Stupid argument. Australain citizens have never been able to carry concealed weapons, so saying crime went up because Joe Citizen couldn't pull a piece on a liquor store robbery he stumbled upon makes no sense. And crime has gone up across the board in Oz, not just crime involving firearms. I know it might be hard for you Yanks to understand, but not that much crime in Australia involves guns to begin with.

Home burglaries increased because people had to turn in their guns. No defense means no risk.

Decrease guns, increase crime. Way to kick your own ass.

If you wanted to work on the car, you already had the motive to do it. The wrench is just a tool. It doesn't make you more of a mechanic than you already were.

Criminals have never had a problem getting guns even in countries that have banned them. That's because bans are laws, and criminals, by default, are not law abiding citizens.
