Without the Gasol trade: Kobe is compared to Allen Iverson. Instead, Elite post player falls in his lap in arguably the weakest era of post players in modern NBA history and he's now compared to Magic Johnson. Any NBA fan knows you give Iverson Shaq, Gasol, and/or Bynum and he wins rings too. So why should I be so impressed with Kobe because he's Derek Jeter & plays on the Yankees of the NBA. It was the Yankees/Lakers before those players arrived and will be long after they retire. Kobe never built anything

The Grizzlies were trying to dump salary. They had offered Gasol to the Bulls for Deng but the Bulls declined from what I read. The Grizzlies were in rebuilding mode. They weren't going anywhere. Were they getting better offers elsewhere? Basically, they dumped salary, added Marc Gasol and got enough cap room to get Zebo and they were one game away from the WCF and are a legitimate threat this season. Yeah it was a great move for the Lakers, but Stern doesn't have the right to veto that move if it falls under the cap rules.
