Why is that? One has to wonder.
The Primary system is fundamentally flawed. For one, turnout for a lot of these races is so small that it wouldn't pass muster as a sample pool in a survey. With that in mind, it's easy for voters of the opposing party to influence the results in their favor.
I don't know that it's actually happening yet, but it seems like a likely eventuality in the near future at best. If you don't care or really know anything about your party's candidate for state rep, but the other party is running a Nazi (or a Communist, or a transgender who just looks like a man in a wig), it certainly must be tempting to organize and ensure that they're the representative for that party.
