Using statistical analysis, it concludes that 40,000 lives would have been saved in two months if a national mask mandate for employees of public-facing businesses had gone into effect on April 1 and had been strictly obeyed. The analysis was for the months of April and May; presumably even more lives would have been saved if a mandate had been in place up to the present.
The study is by Victor Chernozhukov of the Massachusetts Ins ute of Technology and Hiroyuki Kasahara and Paul Schrimpf of the University of British Columbia’s Vancouver School of Economics. It was published online on July 7 by the Center for Economic Policy Research.

I disagree on one aspect of the mask-wearing; I agree with mask wearing generally. Unless you can tell me how many deaths you claim will come about from wearing masks outside at 6+ feet away vs. not wearing a mask while 6+ feet away, you have nothing to talk about.

As ridiculous as it sounds, masks work to prevent unhindered exhalation of virion-laden aerosols indoors as well as out. There would be less morbidity and death if people wore masks at home too, no doubt about it.
(Disclosure: I am not punctilious about this. Mask wearing at home is sporadic for me.)
It would work whether the mandate included outdoors at 6+ away from anyone or not.
