The president's dad, the Big B, understood this with the punishment of Saddam and... leaving him in place by stopping short of Baghdad. But that was looked as a failure because Saddam was still considered a problem. When we intervened in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, we very much solved the problem at that time... the owners of oil. But Saddam was still considered an enemy, even after being given weapons to fight with Iran. It could be said we greatly reduced the effectiveness of each of those countries by aiding Saddam. So that could be considered a big win by some for that time and place.
Vietnam is not Iraq. Iraq is not Afghanistan, Afghanistan is not Korea, Korea is not Panama... continue. The Korean war is looked at through very different lenses depending who you are. That was a huge win for South Korea. This is not so straightforward. It not only depends on whose point of view, it also depends on what time frame we look back on it.
We have had many misadventures into the lives of others. But dont tell South Koreans, Bosnians or Yazidis in Iraq we did nothing to help them. Also, we should not forget that our misadventures in the ME and beyond that region might have greatly reduced Islamic terrorism here. We actually made this a policy theme at one time: Keep pestering them in their back yard, and they wont have the means nor the will to make trouble here. If we were to ask which country has increased strife between Sunni and Shia muslims and help continue ME conflicts we should take a bow, along with Israel. And hey we dont get missiles fired at California. We just burn it ourselves. So do we even feel the conflict...? its seems to me we sit at keyboards monitoring it, but we dont really feel it.
To me so much of this depends on who you are, how you were involved, and how you feel at THIS point in time. my blather...

We were there to get OBL (supposedly). We had no beef with the Taliban until they didn't comply. 20 years of getting the kicked out of them for it, plus OBL was in Pakistan. There are worse countries (like NK) who treat people as bad or worse, and won't even let them leave. Maybe we should camp out in NK a while.
