I think its pretty ridiculous for us to think its a bad idea to choose college over military. There is no reason for anyone who does well in school to forgo the opportunity to better themselves through education over military.

Not to mention the long term outlook has a far bigger upside via college than military. Don't bother posting numbers of military pay up against fresh college grads. Its all about what you make of it and what you do with the opportunity.

You can always join the troops if it doesn't work out. Why sell yourself short and blow a chance to really do something huge with your life. And for those that want to freak out.....I understand that you can do something with your life in the military but it doesn't afford you the same freedoms of a college education. IE there is a limit to what you can accomplish and typically the military is prone to breaking down the "freethinkers" to build them into good little soldiers.

Perhaps I come off as arrogant, but I'd like you to recognize that for most people going to college isn't about being smart. (When I was in college I was astounded at how many stupid people were there). It's about finding the money. The fact that you're clueless about that means you're spoiled. That doesn't make you a bad person, but it means you're naive. Not everybody is lucky. My husband is brilliant, but had to join the Army and use the GI bill to pay for college.

I don't think the military as a whole can be considered "mostly dumb" people. I do think it a far better choice for someone lacking real skills to thrive in a fast paced free thinking society. I would never consider military an option until its last resort.

That's what my dad did. He joined the Air Force during the Korean War so he could go to college. It worked out great for him. If you can't afford college right out of high school it is an attractive alternative. If you are willing to take the risks there are excellent benefits.

But it's not Granny's smelly old hand-me-down; and regardless, that's not the point I was making. There's nothing wrong with growing up with nice things or priviledged. But it speaks of immaturity and lack of empathy when he makes comments like this:
