Why is he a dolt? You're making his point for him. Neither of those facts were super huge secrets, and they still aren't. Yet MJ was a beloved face of the league and Nike, and even though he's been retired for over ten years now he's STILL well known and liked enough that he's showing up in commercials. Maybe it's just a different society or a different media, but the guy's right, Kobe will never be the object of worship that Jordan was. He comes pretty close to being as talented, but he can't even touch Jordan for mass appeal.

Apples and oranges. Jordan retired a few years before Yao arrived and the NBA really got big over there. The fact that Jordan's name is known at all over there when he'd been out of the game for five years when Yao was drafted should be pretty telling.
And just to be clear, I'm not denying that Kobe is popular. I'm just saying he's polarizing, while Jordan was a friggin' PR phenomenon. In his prime his face was on everything and no one seemed to mind at all. Back in the day if you didn't like Jordan you had better be prepared to be cried down as a moron by any other basketball fan (as happened to me plenty of times). Nowadays if you yelled out, " Kobe Bryant!" in a crowded room you'd probably find more than a few people who would agree with you. And all this when Jordan probably had bigger character flaws than Kobe.
