File this under "Everything Trump Touches Dies:"

(CNN) Coronavirus patients taking hydroxychloroquine, a treatment touted by President Trump, were no less likely to need mechanical ventilation and had higher deaths rates compared to those who did not take the drug, according to a study of hundreds of patients at US Veterans Health Administration medical centers.

The study, which reviewed veterans' medical charts, was posted Tuesday on medrxiv.org, a pre-print server, meaning it was not peer reviewed or published in a medical journal. The research was funded by the National Ins utes of Health and the University of Virginia. In the study of 368 patients, 97 patients who took hydroxychloroquine had a 27.8% death rate. The 158 patients who did not take the drug had an 11.4% death rate.
"An association of increased overall mortality was identified in patients treated with hydroxychloroquine alone. These findings highlight the importance of awaiting the results of ongoing prospective, randomized, controlled studies before widespread adoption of these drugs," wrote the authors, who work at the Columbia VA Health Care System in South Carolina, the University of South Carolina and the University of Virginia.

Researchers also looked at whether taking hydroxychloroquine or a combination of hydroxychloroquine and the antibiotic azithromycin, had an effect on whether a patient needed to go on a ventilator.

"In this study, we found no evidence that use of hydroxychloroquine, either with or without azithromycin, reduced the risk of mechanical ventilation in patients hospitalized with Covid-19," the authors wrote.
There are currently no products approved by the US Food and Drug Administration to prevent or treat Covid-19, although research is underway on many drugs.
Hydroxychloroquine has been used for decades to treat patients with diseases such as malaria, lupus and rheumatoid arthritis.

Trump has touted the drug as a "game changer" for Covid-19 and said hydroxychloroquine shows "tremendous promise."

CNN may be a ty news organization, but it doesn't make the study less relevant.

    The enemy of the people
Actually I consider people like you to be more of an enemy. Any one with an ounce of common intelligence knows that truth and reality typically resides some place in the middle. CNN isn’t any better than fox and you’re no better than a full blown liberal.

Nothing gets accomplished or solved when you sit firmly down a political line. The storm we’re in now is rooted in political parties inability to work together. It’s shortsighted and nothing exemplifies that more than selling out far to one extreme.

They way some of you act as if Trump is infallible and the whole world is out to get him sounds an awful lot like an immature 14 year old. Even more so some of you sound no better than Kim Jong Un supporters.

Trump posted the combined videos of Texas rep Crenshaw which has some interesting points that moderates should listen to, as well as conservatives who have soured on Trump's handling of Covid.

My biggest gripe with Trump was his downplaying of Covid's potential spread after those initial 5-15 cases I think in February or so. Granted those comments were at this rallies so it was theatre but it still is hugely poor optically in hindsight.

Aside from that I can't envision a scenario where US government intervention - Federal, state or local, could have stopped Covid from entering the country.

I do think it would have been foolish to implement the current quarantine in February essentially burying the economy in preparation for a spread. I also think no way you could have convinced all 50 governors and a host of big cities mayors to enforce stay-at-home with a handful of infections and no deaths tallied yet.

Moderates, conservatives - I think you guys should give Donald some leeway on Jan-Feb timeline. This Crenshaw video outlines even the Anti-Trump power centers not recognizing what Covid could do.

True, any action before thousands were infected would've required a level of leadership that Trump just doesn't have.

I’m a bit opposite of this. He was slow for sure but I think it would only marginally change things had he been a week or two quicker. We weren’t ever going to have a hard lockdown and that’s the only thing that would have drastically changed things early on.

His grandstanding about ratings and demanding appreciation while playing favorites and deflecting responsibility has made things go from bad to worse.

People are putting way to much in getting a Vaccine in the next 18 months I am starting to doubt that will happen. So I guess what happens if we don’t have a vaccine in the next three years?

S Korea and the US had the same date for their first confirmed case of covid19. They did widespread testing, contact tracing, and stay at home. We still don't have widespread testing or contact tracing. Compare the numbers. It shows what could have been, here.

And we're not going to unless you live in a state with a competent government like California. But let's open the country up without any mitigation strategy and end up like Belgium.
