Update on 2015 OL Trevor Elbert of Rockwall-Heath (24/7):

“I’ve had time to really think about that (Texas) offer now,” said Elbert. “It’s been a month, so I’ve reflected on it. The one main thing is that I’m no longer in shock about it, but at the same time, I’m still definitely greatly appreciative of it.”

“Right now I’d say that the Texas offer is one I’ll always keep in my options of schools,” Elbert said. “But for the moment, I’m open. I’m going to try and get more offers if I can to see. I don’t really have any favorites right now. I don’t even know when I want to have a list of favorites.”

“They’re a school I like a lot,” he said. “They’re recruiting me very hard, probably one of the hardest. There’s a lot to like about them and I’ve been very impressed with everything I’ve seen from them.”

“I’m heading down to Texas on July 27th,” Elbert said. “I plan to tour the campus and see more of it. It’s actually going to be my first real unofficial visit, so I don’t really know what to expect or to look for, but I’m ready to go check them out some more.”

“The coaching staff at Texas is one of the best,” said Elbert. “What stands out to me about them is their determination to be the best team in the nation. They have a great at ude, so that, along with how determined they are and how straight to the point they are, really makes me like them a lot. I’m anxious to get a chance to know them all better.”

And just for the record, I do know that chances with Fournette and Luatua aren't that good, but I'll keep them where they're at since they keep talking about making an official visit. Obviously Texas has no shot if that doesn't happen. Harvey and Springs are considered candidates for late flips.

Thanks for the breakdown, TFloss! I would also add Jamal Adams to the Leaders list. I think it is
up to Mack & Co. to close the deal with him based on the team's performance on the field this season.
If not, he'll be a Gator.

Floss, do you really think Darrion Johnson is a pipe-dream? You name JUCO as a possibility, but I've never had the expression that grades were that big of a problem, to be honest. But I might be, and possibly are, wrong on that one. I'm really looking forward to see what happens to him this season, since he could become a "main target" again if all the other CB's goes to other teams. We do know he have the talent to be a great cornerback!

Texas still the most valuable college football team, according to Forbes. Another trophy for Dodds .

winning these money trophies has made Dodds lazy at winning.

I haven't seen anyone mention Darrion as a possibility at this stage. 24/7 has reported a few times it would be difficult getting him into school and there seem to be other issues nobody wants to talk about (including him having a child). I really hope JUCO or a D1 college is in his future because this one has the feel of an extremely talented kid who seems to just fade away once high school ends.

To those not following closely, seems the two prize recruits that have always been huge Texas leans seem to be fading in probability. By all accounts, Jamal Adams is infatuated with the SEC and in light of quotes/twitter/comments circulated I would have to think he is definitely a Florida lean at this point. Additionally - the experts all seem to be picking Solomon Thomas to Stanford. Those are your two big need positions and top targets - not good. To add insult to injury, some experts think John Bonney may be favoring Baylor.

Stewart, Phil Steele has Texas listed at No. 4 in his preseason rankings. While he may have received some inside information from Bevo, I remain skeptical. I like Texas and would enjoy seeing it hang 50 points on Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry. What are your thoughts on the Longhorns this year?
    -- Mark G, Folsom, Pa.

Phil puts a lot of stock into recruiting rankings and NFL draft potential. In other words, he places a lot of weight on raw talent. It's no coincidence, then, that he seems to have a soft spot for the sport's bluebloods: He ranks Florida State No. 3 (current preseason consensus No. 13), Texas No. 4 (consensus No. 14) and, most astonishingly, USC No. 6 (consensus No. 21).

Conversely, he's a bit lower than most on the likes of No. 11 Stanford (consensus No. 4), No. 13 Texas A&M (consensus No. 6) and No. 14 South Carolina (consensus No. 7).

Phil is right about one thing: I saw Texas in the spring, and the 'Horns most certainly pass the eye test. In regard to size and speed, they look very much like a vintage Mack Brown team. Most notably, quarterback David Ash is now surrounded by a plethora of playmaking receivers (Mike Davis, Jaxon Shipley, Cayleb Jones, running back/receiver Daje Johnson and more). They've still got the talented running back trio of Malcolm Brown, Johnathan Gray and Joe Bergeron, who may finally all be healthy at the same time. Potential All-America Jackson Jeffcoat's return from last year's season-ending injury boosts what should be an excellent front four, and Texas has good experience in the secondary, led by cornerbacks Quandre Diggs and Carrington Byndom.

Still, unlike Phil, I'm reluctant to completely buy in. If this were 2009 and Texas returned 19 starters, I'd be inclined to pencil the 'Horns in for a BCS championship game berth. But after watching them flounder to an 11-15 Big 12 record over the past three seasons, I'm not confident saying Texas will rise up and go 12-1. Brown has assembled a solid staff. Offensive coordinator Major Applewhite had a nice play-calling debut in the Alamo Bowl against Oregon State, and the decision to go full-on no-huddle makes sense in the already frenzied Big 12. He'll get the ball in playmakers' hands. Defensive coordinator Manny Diaz's unit was a train wreck last season, but he's earned the right to a mulligan. Texas will be the most talented team in the Big 12 and perhaps the favorite to win the league, but the past few years have instilled too much doubt, and there are too many questions defensively to assume the 'Horns will make it past Oklahoma (which has crushed them the past two seasons), Oklahoma State, TCU, Kansas State and Baylor with one loss or fewer.

Not sure if relevant or not, but I'm posting it since he is from Texas.

Arizona State got a commitment from a 6'1 230lbs 14-year old linebacker, Loren Mondy, who will be a freshman at Mansfield Lake Ridge High. I think he's a 2017 recruit, but not sure on that one.

This is what's dumb about offering such young kids... He is 14 at 230lbs, he is most likely going to get gain weight when he gets older... How do you project a 14 y/o becoming a D1 athlete?
