Monya Becomes X-Factor For Russia

Sweet-shooting forward Sergey Monya is starting to give the Russians something to chirp about less than a month before they begin their EuroBasket le defense.

The 26-year-old poured in 18 points, including a two-of-four effort from long range, in a 70-66 win over Slovenia in their second friendly this week in Ljubljana.

Equally impressive was Monya's work on the boards. He finished with a game-high 12 rebounds.

Viktor Khryapa - one of Russia's top players two years ago in their gold-medal triumph in Spain - contributed 14 points and Andrey Vorontsevich 12.

"The Russians are now playing with great fight," Slovenia coach Jure Zdovc said.

"We were poor, despite having opportunities to win at the end of the game."

CSKA Moscow power forward/center Erazem Lorbek finished with a game-high 24 points for Slovenia but he endured an almighty struggle at the free-throw line, making just eight of 16.

Great news. Vujacic and Udrih are both back.

We NEED a good player at the 2 position to take the bulk of minutes. If would split Dragic's minutes betwen 1 and 2 spots. The rest should be mostly taken by Udrih and Vujacic if they both play well.

Domen Lorbek unfortunately did not show enough to get some serious burn... :/


Smodis is still out. But hopefully he will be back and healthy enough to play at least some minutes. I think his leadership on and off the court is the most important so he doesn't even need to be 100% imo.

Gasol was operated on his finger. It is a strong posibility that he will miss the first part of the EC. This greatly improves our chances against the Spanyards in the opening matches.

I think the reason he started this games was because Beno was not playing and Zdovc wanted for Dragic to get used to come in later in the game and run the second unit.

Golemac played better than Brezec, Vidmar, D. Lorbek... I would prefer to see Slokar get some minutes at 5 and Golemac some more of his minutes at 4. (I doubt Smodis will be able to play much more than 20 minutes a game)

I agree but i doubt Brezec is getting cut, and i don't think we're carrying more than 5 bigs so the play of Domen has no baring on the status of Golemac. I would prefer to see Golemac over Vidmar, i just wanted to say if Zdovc goes for younger player in this instance i can live with it - our hopes do not hinge on Golemac anyway.

Zupan is a decent player for his size. You know he will give 110% no matter what even if he is a little undersized/undertalented.
