He'll prob get a 2nd 10 day contract because were pretty banged up and then be let go after that to make room for JA's return.

I like the kid though, seems like he has a good at ude and he's really working hard. I hope it works out with him.

I just have a good feeling about this kid. This doesn't feel like a Danny Green, Curtis Jerrells or Alonzo Gee type of signing. I have a feeling Owens would stick here like Temple did until the end of the season and improve. If Temple never got hurt, I feel like he would still be here.

Right. Having seen him live, there's no doubt that he has really good length, long arms and good lateral movement. While it's obvious he doesn't have any of the defensive technique and tenacity of the great Bowen, I can see where the physical tools are similar. I liked the way he closes out on shooters and the way he contests shots. Once he gets familiar with the defensive prinicples and rotations, I expect his confidence will rise, along with his game.

One thing working in his favor is that he's definitely got the mindset and at ude to be a good defender, which should go over very well with the head man. He definitely understands that defense will be his calling card.
It would be nice to see the Spurs bring Bruce in to mentor him next year.........provided he sticks of course (and no lockout). Yes, he does reminds me of Bowen physically. Looks very fluid out there and confident as well.

Defensive techniques aren't enough, nor are they any kind of secret.

There's no way Bruce or anybody can create the desire and commitment to defense if the player doesn't bring his own desire and commitment to defense. Can't be taught.

if this guy has any defensive potential, I don't see why the Spurs wouldn't keep them on their roster for that very purpose.

Anderson should be back soon, but I don't believe that means the Spurs are set for their perimeter defense.

Larry Owens gets another 10 days
    by Andrew A. McNeill
    48 Minutes of

From the color-me-unsurprised department, the San Antonio Spurs announced today that Larry Owens was signed to a second 10-day contract. After his new 10-day deal is up, the Spurs will either have to sign him for the remainder of the season or let him go free.

Do or die time for Larry Owens. His second ten day ends today.

Sign him for the rest of the season or continue the try-outs?

He hasn't really shown enough of anything to warrant a rest of the year deal. My guess is that the tryouts continue.

At this point I think they're more concerned with what hes shown in practice and what he might bring in camp.

At this point, I think they're more concerned about keeping that 13th spot minimally manned at minimal cost.

Owens is probably a goner. They'll want to maintain the roster flexibility to use the 13th spot for a veteran player that may be bought out before the end of the month. Waiving him now does not preclude signing him before the end of the season if they want him in camp next season.

^ Agreed. If he got zero minutes tonight, he better get his affairs in order and be ready to head back to the D League.

Agree, but Owens showed me some things, albeit, a very small sample. I can see him developing into a NBA player in the near future though.

I don't know. Even James Anderson only got 5 minutes last night. That would have been the perfect game for him to continue to get his basketball legs back.

Owens might very well be a goner, but I don't think thats the definitive source.

Based on the silence from Spurs.com I'm assuming a new deal wasn't inked extending him for the rest of the season. A signing is newsworthy. A non-signing isn't.

    Who's next?

    Larry Owens Returns to Tulsa

TULSA, Okla., Feb. 5, 2011— The Tulsa 66ers, proud affiliate of the Oklahoma City Thunder, announced today that forward Larry Owens has rejoined the team after a GATORADE Call-Up to the San Antonio Spurs. Owens will be in uniform tonight for Tulsa when the team plays in Frisco against the Texas Legends at 7 p.m. CT.

Before his stint in San Antonio, Owens played in 23 games (all starts) for the 66ers averaging 12.7 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.1 steals in 31.2 minutes per game.
