Remember when Walker single handedly destroyed hardumb and the rockets in 2019. And then pop played head games with him the rest of the year giving Marco all the minutes. Coach has a part in what we currently see today. Destroyed his confidence like Walker did to the rockets
Lonnie actually played more minutes than Beli for the rest of the season but it doesn't fit your narrative.

White was drafted #29 by the Spurs from nowhere. Nobody knew who he was. He played mostly division II basketball.

Spurs will find gems in the draft.
That exemplifies an anomaly not a likely outcome.

We don’t need “Gems” considering we just traded one away. We need game changers and I think that trade doesn’t bring us closer to one.

Why would we give away a gem for the slight chance of drafting another gem.

Walker is a great example as to why trading White for Bostons mid-ish to late 1st probably won’t end up being a great move.
It's not just tis pick though, it's whatever else they could get from Richardson and Langford, as well as that juicy swap.

They've been shopping White around and they knew his value, e.g. Atlanta wouldn't give Bogdanovic and a 1st for him.

I think they could have put their existing 1st with White in the off-season to move up.
Perhaps in theory White + Spurs 1st would be better than pick 19 + Spurs 1st but would the teams likely to be ahead of the Spurs in the draft order have any interest in White over a pick of their own choosing? Likely not. Also his contract would make trading much more complicated than simply swapping a few pick rights.

It sure seems that the Spurs are collecting picks with the idea to move up in the draft, rather than get 3 rookies on the roster for next season. Hopefully they're the most active team on draft night too.

It's probably got more to do with White's contract. It runs one more year over Murray. Murry contact aligns with McDermott's ending and before vassel and primo extensions. I suspect Johnson might have an extension by then.

The point is, maxing out contract space before Murray's and vassell pay day.

I still wouldn’t call him a bust. Just underwhelmed and disappointed. Spurs gave him enough chances. I’m tired of watching him play basketball. He shouldn’t get any playing time if Spurs already decided he’s not coming back. Better to give it to Devin, Primo, and the celts.

Lonnie has had ample chances. He's started, he's come off the bench. He's played with the ball in his hands, he's played off ball. He's been a driver, he's hunted for spot up shots.

Pop's tried everything short of handing him the keys to the team...and the main problem with Lonnie is still only shows flashes. Flashes are great for a guy with his kind of ability and athleticism, but I'd rather just seem him string together a consistent set of games for a chance, and he seems incapable of doing that.

Walker is a year older than KJ and 2 years older than Vassell. I think by now he realizes that he's not going to be better than these two.

That's difficult to take for a young 23 year old where people your junior are just getting so much better while you languish without improvement.

I'm sure he's a hard worker, but its a hit to one's confidence that youngsters are now better than you!

Lonnie's real problem is that he's too small for the NBA and you cannot learn length!

He is a 6'4" shooting guard that has good quickness and can jump out of the gym. his problem is between the ears.

no Lonnie‘s problem is his low BBIQ and low confidence. Wasted talent

Richardson will take his role. He just doesn’t have the will and bball iq to succeed and I’m not sure he’ll ever get it.

Lonnie just isn’t predatory. In the BB sense.

There was a good example in the Hawks game. The Hawks took a shot and missed, Lonnie got the ball and brought it up with speed. What else.

One of the Hawks had dropped back early to play safety. As Lonnie approached, that guy was set up a couple steps inside the arc, with his back to the basket. No other defenders were back yet, no help defense was possible.

All Lonnie had to do was tap the throttle and he could have blown right by that guy. There wasn’t a chance in the world that guy could have turned, accelerated, and kept pace. Not a chance. It should have been an easy layup.

Lonnie didn’t do it. He hit the brakes. He stopped and looked for DJ to pass the ball. Sigh.

Lonnie will flourish elsewhere unfortunately... I like the dude and his skillset but he is exactly what you claim he isn't "predatory". He is always looking to dish the ball even when he is above the rim with the ball. SMH

I’m past the point of hoping he catches on somewhere and does well, and genuinely concerned for his mental health and well being. He looks broken.

You can’t make someone an alpha. They either are, or they’re not, and it’s not hard to figure out which side of the fence Lonnie lives on.

Not really an anomaly when they also found DJ with a #29th pick the draft before, and Keldon with yet another #29th pick the draft afterwards (or was it 2 drafts later? should check the years but it's a wash). At a point, it becomes undeniable that some teams scout & draft better than others, and can make better use of lower-level assets, and the Spurs are clearly one of these teams. At its core, getting a potential #18-25 pick, a future pick swap, and a prospect out of a #29th pick is great ROI.

And then you factor in that White was/is injury prone (I'm also of the opinion that his feet issues/injuries have permanently altered his game, but it's still up in the air I guess), is old and not really a prospect but a known quan y, was signed to a fair-value (but nothing beyond that) deal that would extend through his prime when the team is far from being able to use that to its advantage, AND that he plays a position the Spurs have a lot of higher-ceiling prospects to develop at....

It's everything but a mystery why the Spurs made that trade. I don't personally see the BOS pick this year netting them a star or anything (I'm thinking they try and trade it to move up, and draft 2 prospects, one with their own pick and another with this second one), but it's better to keep rolling the dice than to fixate on what was ultimately a somewhat-above-average starting player. The Spurs certainly don't need to hold onto those too much if they want to get back to contention.
