Something that's pretty important to keep track of is that Paul's salary is so small that he dodges the buyout prohibition rule that was going into effect this season. He's making less than the MLE, so he's free to join whatever team. That means the Spurs won't be able to force a team to trade for him and thus potentially give up a return the Spurs could use. While he might be traded because he has enough suitors, I wouldn't be surprised if a buyout was part of the pitch. Like if the Spurs are a playoff team, I don't think he'd want to leave or the Spurs want him to leave. But if they aren't, I could see the team waiving Paul without trying to trade him, both to avoid long-term salary and to do right by Paul. So if folks were wondering why he signed for "only $11 Million" despite the Spurs having cap space available for a bigger deal, that could easily be part of it.
