Dog fighting is simply a hideous act. If Vick is proven guilty, he'll never play in the NFL again because he'll be rotting away, incarcerated. If it's shown that he was aware of the activity but didn't participate, he'll be banned from the NFL for life. In any event, his acts or his associations have certainly ensured that he'll be a much-despised figure for the rest of his public life. Frankly, I'm not sure exactly how one explains away 17 dog corpses and dog fighting equipment on one's property, particularly when it appears that the government has witnesses who can pinpoint specific details. I'm skeptical that Vick will be able to surmount that hurdle in this case.

I have seen people do that. I have seen white people root for black athletes then make ethnic jokes. I have also seen black people root for white athletes and make similar jokes. I have also heard hispanic fans do it toward white and black athletes.

It's interesting to me that you're willing to draw broad generalities about people you've never met, based on assumptions about character.
I don't dispute that there are some in our society who would fit the mold that you describe, and I'll admit that any effort on my part to draw some sort of unanimous defense of those who post here is erroneous on that basis. But in my experience here, that hypocrisy is not evident in most of those who post here.
In the end, the Vick case IS NOT about race -- at least with me. If it was Tom Brady or Brett Favre or Troy Aikman or Carson Palmer who was accused of doing precisely the same things, I can assure you that my disdain for him would be identical to the disdain that I hold for Mike Vick. I abhor anyone who associates with those who can be so callous about the lives and welfare of dogs and other animals. I suspect that the same would be true of most who have posted in this thread. Fortunately for all of us -- in the sense that we're not dealing with still another group of abused dogs -- there isn't a parallel case going on involving a prominent white facing similar charges.
Interjecting race into this discussion and presuming that those who are troubled by what has been alleged is somehow only a function of a racist mindset -- and I'm not saying that you in particular are doing this, but it has been a point raised by this thread -- does a disservice to the severity of the charges levied. It's the charges that trouble me, not the iden y of the accused.
