@ the Texas Jam in, '83 I think; I saw Nugent, Rik Emmett & Sammy Hagar do "Whole Lot a Love" TOGETHER.
Nugent played Hagar off the stage; then Emmett did the same to Nugent. FWIW.
No way is Nugent a better guitarist than Jimmy Page. Not even close.
And I've seen Ted Nugent live over 10 times. And when it comes to song writing....well Ted can't even hold a pick to Jimmy.

I never heard Page do HALF what I saw that day with that song.
I love Ted but he is not in the same league as Clapton and Hendrix. Not to me anyhow.
overdubbing and layered takes doth not a superior guitarist make. peewee is just bolstering whottt's take that page is a better studio man/engineer.
This thread comes around every 6 months or so. To me it is all a matter of opinion so the best guitar player depends on who YOU like. I sure couldn't pick one because I like so many. Jmi Hendrix is pure genius due to what he did at the time and he was simply a great guitar player and all you have to do is listen. Clapton is a legend and I love the way he plays. SRV is tops. EVH is great. Santana has a sound and style like no other. Right now I really like John Mayer's playing and he rocks. I don't really know too much of the new guitar players since I listen to classic rock most of the time.
I think Prince should definately be in the top 100 and a personal fav should have an honorable metion....Mike Blessing aka Mike Nesmith.
Went to a concert in May, acoustic, Tommy E Manuel, No sheet!
one of the greatest albums ever!
I agree with Hendrix being the best and that being one of the greatest albums ever.
highway chile, purple haze and fire are my fav tracks....
castle made of sand = best hendrix song of all time.
RHCP did a cover of that song... it wasnt too bad, i thought it was pretty good
I like a lot of guitarists and a lot of different styles...but my personal favorites are (in no particular order)
Alex Lifeson
Mark Knopfler
Brian May
Eddie Van Halen
Eric Clapton
You have guitarists and you have musicians. These are musicians. They didn't just stand there and rip the strings off their guitars (although they certainly could do that). Their guitar work ENHANCED the songs they were part of.
And of course, the above list of musicians is not exhaustive. They just happen to be my favorites.
yall are on crack.
Best Rock guitarist.
Randi Rhoads- Metal
Jimi Hendrix - Psychedillic Rock.
Mark Knopfler 70's
Best Blues Guitarist.
Charlie Christian>>>Albert King>>Robert Johnson>>Lonnie Johnson>>Stevie Ray Vaughn>>>>>>>>Hendrix.

Violinist/Fiddlers:
Charlie Daniels (my all time favorite)
Jeff Cook (Alabama)
Mark O'Connor
Bob Wills
Alison Krauss
A violin is sometimes informally called a fiddle, regardless of the kind of music being played with it. The word "violin" is derived from Italian and the word "fiddle" is native to English. The two words are etymologically related, both ultimately deriving from the same Germanic word.[1] Wikipedia
I personally like this guy. Zakk Wylde
sorry this guy beats anyone listed.
SRV = 5th all time greatest blues guitarist?
CRACK HEAD
Blues is not all about twangy strats, WC handy is the father of the blues and he was a trumpet player.
Comeback to me when your perception of the blues is more than some twangy cheesy SRV imitation band playing the same tired licks over and over.
YEs SRV is 5th of all time.
Buy some records.
SRV had the talent of 10 guitarists. Spoken like a true idiot.
You're Right.
if by ten guitarist, you mean 5 johhny langs and 5 kenny Wayne shepards.
but head to head, he's no Montgomery.
Truth. I never miss him when he comes through Dallas. Never. Great live performances. The Boozed, Broozed, and Broken Boned performance was instant classic. Based on pure guitar skills/talent, on being able to just pick up a guitar, any guitar, and jam in about 10 different styles - I can't think of anyone better. Blues, Metal, Shred, Country, Bluegrass, Southern Rock, Soul, etc... the guy f'n rocks. Loved Pride and Glory, Book of Shadows, BLS...
These threads always crack me up because it's all subjective. There's someone out there who thinks the kid from the White Stripes is the greatest guitarist of all time.
Some of the ones that are really good but overlooked -
Jerry Cantrell.
Tony Iommi (godfather of the power riff)
Jake E Lee
Jeff Healy
The guy who mentioned Todd Whitener (forgot which poster it was) was on to something - very much under the radar but a unique style with the heavy riffs on the acoustic.
Ted Nugent - underrated guitarist. I think it's mostly because his horrific singing washes out the greatness of his guitar work, but there isn't much better (or louder) live. I think Ted was at his best with Derek St. Holmes singing on his solo debut that brought one of the best rock songs of all time - Stranglehold.
Randy Rhodes - anyone who appreciates old school metal knows and appreciates Randy Rhodes. Very melodic and precise in his work, even live.
Dave Mustaine - How in the is there no mention of Mustaine? He's the hands down best speed metal/thrash guitarist I've heard. Kirk Hammet has nothing on Mustaine. 90% of Metallica's "Kill 'Em All" album are altered Mustaine riffs. Not only that, the guy has re-invented his music over the years and successfully made some great groove metal with "Symphony of Destruction", the rest of "Countdown to Extinction" and the tracks on albums like "Cryptic Writings". As a rock/metal guitarist, if you want to test your ability to palm mute you throw yourself at some Mustaine riffs. Personally, I really like more Megadeth songs (27) than songs of any other musician/band. It's almost unheard of for me to like more than 5 or 6 songs from a single musician/band.
On a personal favorite musicianship level (not necessarily greatest guitarist) I like Todd Park Mohr of Big Head Todd and the Monsters. That's another great live band that I never miss when they come through Dallas.
So many others to list, but that's all I'm going to ramble on for now.
