Nono, with the subtle goods.![]()
Still wished Gaddefors would have gotten some minutes, 6'8 SF, seemed decent when he played that 1 game. I wonder if it had anything to do with him not currently under contract with Euro team, didn't want to risk injury.
They would probably ask Ryan Richards rights too. This is a no-go to me Nono![]()
So a couple games ago people are touting his ability to defend canadian wiggins, now he's not gonna cut it?
Maybe the kid was fatigued playing so much organized ball in such a short span?
Unless we get a player like Ibaka on our team that can block shots people like KA/Daye/Errors are going to get killed trying to play defense. If they play against anyone with an outside shot they won't be able to fight through screens which make for easy shots and dunks.
He missed the gamewinner though. Wiggins makes that.
I didn't get to go to SL like I normally do this year, so had to settle for watching just 3 games. From what I saw, there is no one I am high on at all. That doesn't mean players didn't do ok, but no one showed me anything different from their scouting reports. No one had the "Gary Neal" moments for me where you really thought: this guy has a legit shot to make the team and I would really like that to happen. The only player that came close to this was Daye. He did a lot of bad things (shot selection/selfish), but his skill set, despite missing a ton of shots, was on full display. I'm just not sure if he has anything resembling a spark mentally. Will he engage? Will he buy in? I think he works hard, but I am not sure if it's for the right reasons.
I am completely soured on Ayres. He's not an NBA player. Just not making mistakes and being a pretty good teammate does not an NBA player make.
Kyle Anderson left me feeling like he's the human scouting report. He played literally like the exact scouting report on him. His lack of foot-speed has me very concerned about him defensively at every position. He defends like a pre-average Dirk with swipes and some blocks but really not anything else of note. The things you heard he did well, he does well. The things he does not so well, he does not so well. It's going to be a bit of an uphill battle for him to find his position(s) and be a net positive player athletically. Very interesting player and the things he does well are very good.
I don't get why so many like Cotton. Not a fan at all. He can shoot and is a fine player, but I don't see "it".
I see why Cotton was not drafted by anyone. If he makes it in the NBA I think it will be due to his work in the D-League.
However I disagree about KA. What I saw was a player who at the very least is quicker than Dirk defensively and definitely more aware.
I do not like his shooting form, but you cannot argue with it's production in spite of that, yet Chip can probably fix that.
On the things he brings to the table offensively, I see an opposing teams' nightmare to deal with.
I thought Daye really lost his head at the end of last night's game. That was incredibly disappointing to see. I thought he was a little too unselfish, though. He needed the ball in his hands more often down the stretch.
No, not trolling unfortunately. We all know Anderson is far from a highlight reel but he has so much work to do before he is NBA ready. He does have long arms which helped him poke the ball away on defense but he really didn't do anything that was outstanding. My fear is that the guy feels a little too en led to be on the team. He obviously (from his q/a session with kids) thought he would be drafted way earlier than he was so I'm not sure why he didn't play harder than he did. Maybe he was tired but that doesn't say much for his desire.
He has good passing skills and awareness but was beaten off the dribble on several occasions. I think one of his steals came when his man got by him and he reached from behind.
I thought Green and Blue looked pretty good and played with some intensity and desire. Daye's shot came around but then he just started getting selfish and took every shot down the stretch.
Huh? He got doubled and gave up the ball when he could have made the game winner. He should have shot the damn ball or passed it to someone who was open.
He had 2 crucial turnovers with the ball in his hands down the stretch...
He looks like a guy who was drafted 30th in the first round. I didn't tout his defense although I'm sure others saw what they wanted to see. The good news is, I'm not a coach and really don't know other than what I casually watch. I hope I'm wrong about him. I saw a bunch of guys who played harder and with more desire than Anderson.
I agree with your last statement, & Anderson does need to play harder, but when he made crucial plays down the stretch, & there is no way around it. His reach & length made up for him getting beat those 2 times, & imo, he did not touch the ball enough. Even tho Blue played hard, he, Cotton, & Daye were black holes.
I think defensively in the future Anderson is gonna have to bulk up a bit and guard the 4, he was getting blown by for much of the game yesterday on the wing. Sure he gets some strips but I don't think you can rely on that especially with the Spurs. I was a bit disappointed that they didn't let him run the offense more.
They're all project guys. If 1 or 2 out of the bunch pans out, then you can call it a daye... there's no Kawhi Leonard here, but Kawhi was a high draft pick, so it makes sense.
Austin Daye: 15th Pick, 2009 draft
Kawhi Leonard: 15th pick, 2011 draft
I thought he got tired, but I'm probably being charitable. He only played 38 minutes or so, but he's probably not used to playing those kind of minutes in compe ive situations.
Thought it was a pretty good game, but the officiating puzzles me. You'd have thought it was Rice's dad playing in that game for all the respect he was getting from the zebras. I wouldn't be surprised if Washington shot twice as many free throws as the Spurs did, and the Wizards were intentionally fouling at different points of the game. Sort of surprised they were calling those. If Rice had taken that exact same shot at the end of the game, you know they'd have called that push on the wrist. Kyle needs to get used to the frustration of getting ed by the refs now, I guess. He's not going to get any love as an NBA rookie.
First, the guys who the Spurs should pass on: Denmon, Ejim, Morris, Blue and Green. They all have their moments, but more bad ones than good ones. Maybe next year.
Cotton looked MUCH better. He shared the ball, took smart shots, played much better defense, and had good awareness. Clearly this is more representative of the guy they pictured when they signed him.
It didn't feel like Thomas had a very good game, and then you realize he scored eleven points. I'm sure his percentage had to be good in order to do that. Efficiency and solid play are what you want out of a backup. He'll be one somewhere, especially if his three pointer keeps improving. I don't think there's room for him, but I'd rather have him than Daye on the big team.
Anderson paid really good attention the last few games on defense. He got lost a few times again this game, so he knows what he has to work on. It's really frustrating that he's probably the best guy to be handling the ball on the entire team and has probably touched the ball less than anyone in the rotation over the course of the summer league. My guess is that he was told that he isn't there to be evaluated because he's guaranteed a spot in camp. He's pretty clutch on both ends of the floor, which is something that's hard to teach, and he got fouled on that last shot. If you want a focused Kyle Anderson going through the summer into training camp, having his last memory of summer league being that moment is probably exactly what you'd wish for.
I really don't dislike Jeff Ayres as much as some of you do. He's not very physically gifted, but he plays his ass off. He might foul a shooter, but he made the right rotation to be there. He might miss a dunk, but he set the screen and rotated to where he needed to be. Would I be okay with the Spurs sending him down the road if they can find someone better to take his place? Sure I would. I just wouldn't think it was the end of the world having him competing with Bonner for Aron Baynes' spot as last big off the bench this season. I am expecting Baynes, if he stays, to jump both of them in the rotation.
If you could combine Jeff Ayres and Austin Daye, you'd have a solid rotation NBA player with flashes of greatness, and the byproduct would be someone that needed help dressing himself in the morning. I'm kind of everywhere on Daye. Super confusing player. Daye simply puts up too many numbers not to end up on someone's roster, though I think he's just a massive ball hawk. A hawk manages to dominate the ball without being labeled a ball hog, and he's an expert at it. I don't know how he gets so many more touches than his teammates, but he feels like the only person shooting at times, and his teammates keep taking terrible shots just to get themselves a shot attempt. I've never seen the thing Celtics fans talk about where Rondo manufactures assists for himself but I imagine they'd watch Daye and go, "Yep, that's it". Numbers or no, I think my final verdict is that I really don't want that guy anywhere near my basketball team. Maybe he finally figures it out somewhere. Good for him if he does. I'd send him down the road.
And he'd have autistic, automatic, re edly random 25-point games against us with Dallas...only to suck against every other team in the league. The jump-shooting Dejuan Blair.
The biggest problem with Ayress is bad feel for the game, he doesn't read the plays in time and mostly step or two slow starting his reactions...
Washington shot 23-35 freebies while SA shot 16-19. Fun game to watch, but no one on the Spurs really stood out. Morris did make me cringe a few times with forced shots. All week it seemed clear that he was just focused on getting his--which is probably the norm in SL.
Some players just don't pan out. I'm a big Daye fan, but he's no Kawhi. I'm actually rooting for him, hope that under the right program he can become a contributor. That's all the Spurs need from him, to be able give minutes behind Kawhi...
I think fatigue has been an issue for him as well. I wonder how long it's been since he played 38 minutes. Much less 25ish minutes in as many games, one after another, that he played this summer. Been a long time.
