Whistleblower behind Lutnick-Epstein allegations dies

Whistleblower Simon Andriesz, who raised allegations concerning US commerce secretary Howard Lutnick’s relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, has died by suicide.

Andriesz was previously a managing director at Wall Street firm BGC Group, where Lutnick, now the US commerce secretary, served as chief executive.

The death of the 57-year-old former British banker was confirmed by his friend and adviser, John Robertson.

He told Money Marketing that Andriesz died a week ago at a trauma treatment centre in Thailand, where he had been receiving treatment.

“Simon’s death is devastating. He spent years trying to do what he believed was the right thing, raising serious concerns and asking ins utions to listen. Instead, he was left fighting on multiple fronts for far too long,” Robertson said.

“I am not going to speculate about causation, but there now has to be a brutally honest examination of how Simon was treated, what warnings were missed, and whether the systems supposedly there to protect whistleblowers actually protected him at all.

Suspended Palm Beach County Clerk of Courts Mike Caruso said he still “intend[s] to win” the November election and has not abandoned his campaign — nor has the local Republican Party abandoned him — even after his August arrest on allegations he molested a small child.In a statement to the Miami Herald issued via his spokesperson, Juda Engelmayer, Caruso said he is still running for the clerk and comptroller post, despite indications to the contrary. Caruso’s campaign website is down, and his campaign finance reports show he refunded two recent contributors and a campaign data vendor.


“I maintain my innocence and remain a candidate for Clerk of the Circuit Court and Comptroller. My name is on the November ballot, and I intend to win this election,” he said in the statement. “If the voters elect me, my intention is to take office and continue serving Palm Beach County.

Bard College president Botstein resigns

Leon Botstein, the former president of Bard College who had come under scrutiny for his ties to Jeffrey Epstein, resigned from all of his positions affiliated with the college on Wednesday.


The announcement came the same day that the House Judiciary Committee sent a letter to Bard leaders saying that while Dr. Botstein was president, he “likely enabled and possibly even participated in” Mr. Epstein’s abuse. The letter also raised concerns about how Bard under Dr. Botstein handled sexual-misconduct complaints on campus.


Dr. Botstein announced he would retire in the spring from the presidency, a position he had held for half a century, but had stayed on in a variety of roles at the college until Wednesday.


The letter, from Representative Jamie Raskin, ranking member of the committee, pointed to an email from May 2014 in which a person writing from the Bard president’s email address had asked whether a woman Mr. Epstein may have been trafficking was “for me, or are you keeping her for yourself.”
