damn, if you took the 224M, took a 40% federal bite out of it (down to 134.4M), invested it and an extremely super modest 3%, your annualized income (after a 40% federal bite) comes in just under 2.5 million. This is, of course if you play it really really really safe, and no nothing about investments, money management, and tax sheltering. *sigh*

A quick (and very loose) calculation of the expected payout of a lottery ticket for this size jackpot reveals that it is actually a good investment to purchase this lottery ticket (i.e. the expected payout is slightly higher than the dollar cost of the ticket.)

I only based this on the 355 million annualized payout, but did not factor in the time value lost over the 26 payments. Additionally I didn't factor in the expected value of non-jackpot payouts. So its possible that this is still not a good investment, but it is close.

Edit: Awww, scratch that. I really don't know enough about the non-jackpot payouts to make such a claim. I have bought 1 lottery ticket in my life and it was a scratch off (+$7!). All I can say is that for a $1 ticket, and a 355 Million dollar payout (if it was lump sum at that amount), then the expected payout is higher than the cost of the ticket.
Play numbers 32 and over to slightly decrease your expected loss.

I'd blow about 20 million right off the bat and just invest the rest. A modest Texas Ranch, A modest Montana Ranch, A house in Pedregal in Cabo and a modest 40ish foot sportfisher.

I'd blow about 30 mil and use that extra 10 on a more spacious Texas Ranch and also some European getaway, in my modesty.

Because everyone picks birthdays for lottery numbers, so the expected number of people to split a jackpot between should be lower.

I'd have to go with a small house in the Sierras and one in the Beartooths. Maybe one in Wyoming too.

Good Lord ... that's a lot of money.

I hope whoever wins is a pool of people. That's just too much for one person.

    Unless it's me.

I play the lotto regularly. Seems like people that don't play regularly are the ones who win.

I hope tonight's different and I win. I could spread some cash around to some people on here I'm sure.

I would never wait in line. HEB has machines where you can buy and print your own tickets. I dropped a fiver there last night.

Early reports are that there was no winning ticket(s) sold.

    O/U $500,000,000?

    I'm guessing 475.

2 tickets won ... and 67 tickets matched 5+0 for $250,000, or $1,000,000 if they bought the megaplier.

I got the most numbers I've ever gotten on one ticket without winning anything. That sucks ... good thing I didn't quit my job yet.

(CNN) -- A family in Washington that was one of two jackpot winners in the Mega Millions drawing will speak to reporters about its windfall Thursday.
However, the buyer in Idaho with whom the family will split the $380 million prize has yet to come forward.
Washington lottery officials have so far only disclosed that the family is from Ephrata, a small town with a population of just over 6,000. They have scheduled a news conference at 2 p.m. (5 p.m. ET) to introduce the lucky family that will claim $190 million -- half of the $380 million jackpot -- from the Tuesday night drawing.
The ticket was sold at a Safeway store in Ephrata, lottery officials said.
Store Manager Geoff Bell told CNN affiliate KREM that the phones began to ring off the hook when news surfaced that the store had sold one of the two winning tickets.
"It's great for the community. It's nice that Safeway can be a part of helping somebody make some dreams come true for them," Bell told the affiliate.
The ticket in Idaho was sold in Post Falls.
    Tuesday's Mega Millions numbers were 4, 8, 15, 25, 47 and 42 (42 was the Mega Ball number).
As days went by without a winner, residents in the 42 states that take part in the Mega Millions drawing rushed to stores to buy more and more tickets, pushing the jackpot to $380 million -- the second-highest in the drawing's history.
The highest was $390 million in 2007.
