Good call...
Given that:
1. James Anderson remains available
2. Matt Bonner remains unavailable
3. The Toros traded for a center last week
Crystal ball says that Marcus Cousins gets called up this weekend on a 10 day contract and serves as the 5th big for the five games in seven nights that begin on Feb 8th.
Good call...
That's as good a guess as any.
I've got no clue how close Bonner is to making a return but if he's not ready to go by Tuesday, which seems to me a possibility if it's only bruising, Cousin would make perfect sense: they know him, he knows them, the skillset fits and it's the perfect type of carrot the Spurs like to give to their D-League prospects.
I guess. Boateng has been pretty bad though. Would be a lot of small ball, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
Another funny thing is the Toros just signed Owens' former Oral Roberts and Tulsa teammate Moses Ehambe.
I do agree the auditions will continue, but players might come back through the revolving door once the final waivers are done.
Kinda felt bad for Owens. He was always the biggest cheerleader on the bench...the first one to jump up and applaud a moderately decent play. Apparently, ass-kissing only gets you so many 10-days...
This is all about flexibility. Clearly, the Spurs are (wisely) waiting for the post trade deadline buyout period to ensue, to see if they can pick up a credible, established player on the cheap. If they can't, then I'd imagine both Owens and Udoka are in play as options to be signed for the remainder of the season.
Owens (theoretically) fills the need. He's a legit three, athletic, known as a defender, can shoot the three and relatively young. Udooka doesn't, but he has this going for him: a more thorough grasp of the Spurs' system and NBA experience. I've got to think, if they had two injuries on the wings and they needed one of the two to play in a playoff game, Pop would feel more comfortable with Udoka. Clearly, they'd like to see if they could do better, though.
I am thinking that with JA back the next player brought in might not be a SF. With Bonner out I expect a 3pt shooting big maybe to be signed next. Maybe a player like Novak to fill in for a while. just a thought
I think they can sign Jow Alexander for 10 days and agree that waiting trade deadline buyouts for flexibilty.
Owens seemed like a good guy that had some definite ability.
I hope he gets a summer league and training camp invite next season and another shot.
Me, as well!![]()
I thought about him too. After all, he's a young stretch-4, with tons of athletic ability. He's certainly not a one-dimensional player.
I've seen him a couple of times in D-League action, and catches your attention. The guy runs the floor well, is a willing defender, hits the glass and has shown a decent, yet inconsistent stroke from behind the arc. It almost makes one wonder why he failed at the "big-boy' level.
Even though Alexander is still a bit raw, he could possibly have the makings of a solid long-term backup for Bonner.
Me too. It was hard not to like this kid. Judging from the amount of time and instruction the Spurs invested in this kid, I wouldn't be surprised if they target him for inclusion on their summer-league roster.
Apparently, NBA rules only get you so many (two) 10-days... After that, you have to sign the player for the remainder of the season.
Pretty good thing for Owens though. He got some time in the NBA, which is huge for his confidence, and made some serious money. D-League players don't make much at all (I've heard 20k to 30k with housing paid for - chump can probably confirm or deny). But as a D-League call up he'll make about $5,200 per game. So for having been eligible for 10 games he pulled in about $52,000. Nice cash.
Larry was a nice kid. His family was very nice & it was cool to see them get a look @ the big time.
Best of luck to you, Larry.
Ah. Ok.
So, ass-kissing (and league rules)...
Larry is back with the Tulsa 66ers. Saw him play in person against the Texas Legends in Frisco. He looked pretty good last night.
Another Ex-Spur Antonio Daniels dropped in 28 for Texas/Frisco and was the best player on the floor.
Wow, I finally guessed right on a signing..![]()
