I had a couple relatives that were lost and never found in Thailand after the Dec. 24th 2004 earthquake and subsequent tsunami. The ones that did survive and experienced that one said it sounded like a thousand jets as it came barreling through Phuket. Sad news indeed...
If any country is prepared for something like this its Japan.
I've been pulling an all nighter writing a Japanese paper and this happens. Kind of eerie...
The reason the Lituya Bay tsunami was so high was because of the displacement of water was confined. It's analogous to dropping a bowling ball in a bath tub as opposed to a pond. Nevertheless, the Canary Islands event will make the Sumatran tsunami look weak.
10 to 15 minutes away.
10 to 15 mins away from it hitting here.
Two morons just sitting on Waikiki beach, the newscasters are frustrated.
Eah I saw them on CNN
Police helicopter telling them to GTFO. Idiots.
That said, I wouldn't be half surprised if we got no waves whatsoever and I stayed up all night for jack squat.

1-3.3 feet waves have hit some coastal cities in the Philippines. No damage thus far.
"As early as 426 BC, the Greek historian Thucydides inquired in his book History of the Peloponnesian War (3.89.1-6) about the causes of tsunamis. He argued rightly that it could only be explained as a consequence of ocean earthquakes, and could see no other possible causes for the phenomenon."
That's some ing impressive sciencing right there.
well we all know how earthquakes are generated. as the two plates collide, you get a subduction zone due to differences in density of the crust. Thats how crust is destroyed, it basically gets recycled . but in sub zone the more dense one sinks down into earths mantle, I'm guessing that creates some sort of a vacuum to say the least as it does look like a toilet.
Yep,
Except that after hearing this the other Greeks proceeded to stone him to death while mocking him, since everybody knows that Tsunamis are caused by giant serpents that spawn out of Poseidon's asshole every time he eats too much y Thai food.![]()
You can also have massive landslindes under water as well that do similar things during earthquakes.
The kenetic energy contained in a wall of water moving at 800kph must be stupefying.![]()
