His most recent stats look "ok"... but his career, year-by-year advanced metric stats look somewhat mediocre... (WS/48, PER, DBPM, ORTG, DRTG, etc...)

He is not the player he used to be and Im sure the injury will set him back further. Lots of decent players have put up good numbers on bad teams. He is already a huge upgrade over Manu, though. At least we can say we improved in that area.

Not gonna lie, I've never been a big fan of Gay's game, but at this price, even after his injury, this is a steal. Gay has legitimate talent and coming off the bench for us will probably pretty damn solid. At that price, it's a no-brainer.

If Pop talked to him about a pairing, that doesn't sound like the bench. He didn't turn Gay's head with talk about playing with our bench players.

A 30 year old coming off an achilles injury is the best they could do?

Can someone name a player that came back from an achilles injury and was still decent and maybe I'll feel better about this.
No, but all of those guys were pushing 36. Hard to know if it was more the injury or age. But at 30, hopefully he can do well.

well Mathews may counter my theory.

If he is in fact healthy this is a great signing. Someone who can create with his size was ideal. I wonder what his D will look like as well as his defense.
You want to see his and his defense? That last sentence has me a little confused.

    Game 1
    Kyle - 4 points / 4 rebounds / 2 assist / 1 steal

    Game 2
    Kyle - 8 points / 5 rounds / 4 assist / 2 steals / 30% FG

    Game 3
    Kyle - 6 points / 9 rebounds / 5 assist / 1 block

    Game 4
    Kyle - 20 points / 7 rebounds / 2 assist / 4 steals

The Kyle played great or whatever against the GSW has been sooooo blown out of the water. He played like a serviceable NBA player... I get it though... that's a huge jump from the bum he has been over his career, but let's pump the brakes a bit.
Didn't say he played great, but he played well compared to his teammates, which is the criteria people are using to prop up Simmons(3rd highest TS% in the rotation during that series, along with 2nd in all advanced on/off numbers and VORP, etc)

Again, I think it was a completely meaningless series once Kawhi went down(I even defended Aldridge, which is rare coming from me), but I'm just using the same criteria that people are using for Simmons' tiny sample size in a skewed setting..most posters here like one of them and dislike the other, which isn't even debatable..

Well the guy seems to have a great work ethic. This was before he blew his achilles. Maybe he can teach LMA something about being in shape...

Great low risk, high reward move.

    Hopefully Spurs go to the 1 - C - 3 wing - 1 PG philosophy.

    LA - Gay - Kawhi - DG - DJ

Pau - Bertans or Kyle - Simmons - Manu or Hanga - Patty

Lee (prob back), Kyle,TP, Forbes, White, Splitter or Black

If Spurs keep Simmons...Kyle or Bertans wont get any minutes when Gay is 100%.

The average age for injured players was 29.7, with seven years of playing experience (Kobe's in his 17th year); in the first year back from injury, players played 5.21 fewer minutes per game. That number dropped to 4.42 in the second year back. More tellingly, player efficiency rating (PER) dropped by 4.64 the first year back and 4.28 the second. To understand how severe that drop is, consider: This year, a difference of 4.64 PER is the difference between Kobe Bryant and Ersan Ilyasova.

On a per 40-minute basis, "athletic" stats like blocks, rebounds, and steals actually held steady post-injury. The same is true for field goal and free throw shooting percentages. Given players' dropoffs in overall efficiency, that was surprising, so I dug a little deeper and looked at rebound rates, free throw attempts, and other areas that might affect a player's PER. There is a general decline in FTA in post-injury years (which would pose a problem for Kobe, given how many shots he takes), with rebound rates actually holding more or less steady. The dropoffs showed up in any number of categories. Some players shot abysmally once they came back; for others, usage rates plummeted, suggesting they were no longer capable of creating their own offense. But taken as a whole, there was an obvious and expected drop in efficiency for nearly everyone.
    Ouch.

You keep saying this. He also played good vs GSW in the RS. Or are you just forgetting this.

Surely the Spurs aren't rolling it back with Aldridge/Gasol starting. That pairing is a nightmare in todays NBA.

Y'all mother ers forget PopaGOAT has helped guys with physical limitations like Roger Mason Jr and Gary Neal light up for a season or two. Imagine what he will do with a super long, skilled guy like Joto.

Brandon Jennings was dropping 20/20 games before he tore his, and look at him now. Is he even in the league anymore?

Here's an article I remember reading from a couple years back that paints a pretty grim picture. http://www.cbssports.com/fantasy/bas...lles-recovery/

Yeah. I don't think Simmons should be paid anything stupid either and am not a person that thinks he should be starting over Danny Green.

The more impressive part of Simmons is the overall playoff run though. Kyle wasn't cracking the rotation until TP and Kawhi went down.
