Rep. Chip Roy (R., Texas), a prominent opponent of the revised bill, blasted his colleagues in a speech on the House floor. “I’m absolutely sickened by a party that campaigns on fiscal responsibility and has the temerity to go forward to the American people and say you think this is fiscally responsible,” he said.

After the vote, Roy said he was happy to talk to Trump and Johnson, but he wouldn’t vote for a debt ceiling increase without specific spending cuts.
Earlier Trump had targeted Roy on Truth Social, calling for primary challengers against him in 2026. “Chip Roy is just another ambitious guy, with no talent,” Trump said.

Looks like 34 (R) still didn’t support the CR and it had to pass with (D) votes.

the problem isn't the number of government workers, it's procurement, waste and fraud

The are much bigger problems for Social Security that waste, fraud, etc. I really hope Gen Z and Millennials aren't planning their retirement around Social Security because this thing is headed for fiscal disaster.

remove the Social Security income caps and there's no problem. the only reason it's in trouble is because rich folks don't pay their fair share and Congress used to like to grab the funds for other things.

(Social Security doesn't really belong in this thread -- it's prefunded by workers.)

Trump already pledged to kill it in 2020. He was smart enough to not run on that this time around but he'll still do it. That's the problem for Social Security.

Is that what you think or have you actually run the math on that? Regardless, how is it fair for wealthier people to have to pay into a program multiple times more than they could ever possibly receive?

In a decade or so the "prefunding" won't cover the expenses, so guess what will be covering the shortfall? Debt and deficits.

because their country has given a lot to them, and their children deserve it too

Great, maybe then we can finally remove the income caps and extend the life of the program, while we figure out what to do.

    What's the rush?

They're already paying higher federal income taxes. And frankly, not everyone who gets their SS taxes capped is really rich anyway.

indeed, why should people who make only $168,000 dollars/year pay a greater percentage of their take home pay in SS withholding than people who make millions of dollars a year?

Because the people who make millions/billions a year are already paying higher federal income taxes and shouldn't be overfunding a program they aren't benefiting from much at all from.

sounds more like an idiosyncrasy than a principle, I happen to disagree as previously posted
