    My family has always referred to pinto beans as brown beans. Interesting.

    I thought that might be what you meant. But, in the deep south, we called them pinto beans...and occasionally you'd hear them referred to as red beans. We called kidney beans "brown beans". Go figure.

    My family is from the south (West Virginia, Virginia, Tennessee, Louisiana). We called kidney beans kidney beans. My relatives always referred to pinto beans as brown beans. Maybe it's a West Virginia thang! LOL!

    Could be. I grew up mostly in north Georgia and coastal South Carolina (Charleston), with frequent visits to Alabama (you probably wouldn't recognize any of the names of the wide spots in the road where I have relatives..but, I can tell you that most of what they say about rural Alabama is true... ).
