Mason to the Bulls in a Thomas deal would make sense if the Bulls dump Salmons for two bigs.
not sure if the Bulls plan to play them at all. getting rid of Salmons was clearly a financial move. pretty sure Elson will be waived.
but yes, if the Bulls want to still be compe ive for the PO, they will need a shooter even more. Rose -Hinrich-Devin Brown. not exactly what they call a deep back court. but they also don't have a back up for Deng. of course this would be a point against Mason. what about Finley? didn't play in Indy. (or was he injured?)

The Bulls weren't desperate to dump Tyrus, they can renounce him this summer to get more cap room if the want. He was just supposed to be the bait to get someone to take Salmons off their hands.

Now that the Bucks did them a favor, there's no good reason to dump him unless they want picks.

All the reports say that the Bulls are almost guaranteed to move Thomas though..it's not just about trying to attach him to another deal..they just don't want to deal with him anymore..

Furthermore, they just got Hakim Warrick in the deal for Salmons..they apparently plan on playing Warrick..so there's not much room for Thomas anyways..

It'll come down to Spurs or Knicks IMO..

From what we are hearing, the Spurs as of right now have no deal close to being done. They have supposedly had some "close calls" but there is a chance now that nothing happens. However, they have all hands on deck and will supposedly be aggressive.

I'm also of the opinion that nothing will happen other than maybe dumping Mason..hopefully I'm wrong..

Mason + a 1st for Thomas makes a lot of sense though..

Yup. And it seems the best we'll get is some stupid 2nd round pick for Mason, not someone we could use now.

I don't see how what they'd be so desperate for. Sure he and Vinny don't get along, but Vinny was a bad loss away from getting fired and publicly hung out to dry. I don't think anyone expects him back for next season either.

All I'm keeping in mind is that when Thomas was coming up in trade rumors, the extra-salaries were always tacked on. Thomas+Salmons to the Spurs. Thomas+Heinrich to the Blazers and Lakers. Thomas+Deng to the Wolves. Tyrus was the sweetener.

But there are conflicting reports. Russilo on his nba podcast on ESPN from Wednesday had two different stories from 2 different scouts: 1 that Thomas could be had for nothing and the other had the opposite.

Now that they've put down their cap for next season with the flexibility of a QO on Thomas, the safe thing I think is to just keep him unless they get thrown Splitter or a first, maybe unprotected.

hopefully Spurs fans will get to hear about some of those close calls after the curtain closes.

and hopefull 'all hands on deck' isn't CIA Pop and KGB Lindsey speak for "Well, Mason only has this year left . . . let's add Splitter to get a conditional 2nd!"

It's weird that there hasn't been much mention of a Mahinmi salary dump. Mahinmi to the Nets makes a whole lot of sense (the showcase, Roy Rodgers, they suck, etc.) but it's tough to say what he's worth. If the Spurs don't plan to keep him, hopefully they at least can get a second round pick for him.

MEM can take him straight up also, so can OKC and boy wonder.

Mahinmi traded out will be like the last guy to get a lifeboat from the anic.

You obviously could be right, I'm just saying what all the Chicago sources are reporting, and their fanbase seems to believe that it's like a guarantee that he gets traded..this seems to be the consensus with everybody related to the Bulls..who knows though, "sources" are wrong all the time..

I could see why they would do it for Mason + a 1st round pick though, that should be a no-brainer for the Bulls IMO..their frontcourt is already Noah/Miller/Gibson/Warrick + possibly James Johnson..they could be set there already..their backcourt is very poor though..I really don't think they want to be relying on Pargo and Devin Brown to be their main guys behind Rose and Hinrich..so they would be getting a player to help them for their playoff push, and then possibly a 1st round pick, which would make it a no-brainer IMO..

I think it's very possible that the Spurs are reluctant to give up the pick though..

ESPN is saying Sacramento might be trying to get Hinrich in the T-Mac package though, so we'll see what happens with Thomas here, he could be packaged..should be interesting and complicated..

did they really get Warrick? I thought it was Salmons for Kurt Thomas and Elson.

The original report was Thomas/Elson, but apparently it's Hakim Warrick/Joe Alexander according to Milwaukee radio..they said there's still a chance that it could be the former, but it's most likely the latter..

That would probably fill up their big man rotation anyways, I would assume..Kurt is still a pretty useful player..

I'm pretty damn surprised the Bulls not only got expiring contracts but also a useful player (Warrick) in return for Salmons. If the Bucks are aiming for the playoffs, they could be a buyer if the Spurs are looking to unload McDyess' contract.

Warrick and Gibson would definitely make TT redundant.
maybe I read to much into it.....first it's KT, then it's changed to Warrick.....could it be that they switched to Warrick because the agreed to a deal about TT?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I just watched the dvr'd game from last night and I couldn't find Mahinmi behind the bench. Anywhere. And believe me I looked. He wasn't active because Finley and Ratliff were and were easily found, and there was no one near like Mahinmi in streetclothes.

I checked every time the camera would cut to the bench and paused a lot of times. He wasn't there unless he was well off to the side and I fast forwarded past him. I would have thought he'd be sitting next to the local looking intern that's always hanging around behind the bench. But I couldn't find him.

Now ordinarily I'm sure if he was left at the hotel or was late from the a/s break we'd hear about it . . . but with McDonald at the the helm . . .

Maybe I'm grasping at straws or jumping at shadows or whatever, but Ian must be toast.

I think that's a great point, and that's likely the situation IMO..the deal isn't official and hasn't been sent in to the league yet, so I would assume that they're ironing out the other potential moves before making it official..

The Bucks-Bulls probably agreed to either deal in principal, so either Thomas/Elson or Warrick/Alexander..the Bulls are probably seeing what ends up happening with Hinrich/Thomas before making it an official deal, or something like that..it doesn't really affect the Bucks either way..

It's kind of tough for the Spurs, because if the FO actually is interested in Thomas, they're gonna have to wait and see what happens with Sacramento/Houston/Chicago/New York before making a decision, which could explain why the Spurs aren't "close" to a deal yet, like timvp said..

This is one of the first years I can remember where there is so much uncertainty; even around deals supposedly 'completed in principle'.

I would be very curious to see what deals the Spurs pursuing that fell through.

That's interesting. I wasn't looking for him. Perhaps the Spurs told him to just stay on his All-Star break since he'll either be traded or waived.

That would honestly make sense. There's really no use to have Mahinmi around in about eight hours.

As of after the game, the Spurs were supposedly in a holding pattern waiting for the Knicks and Rockets to make their moves. That will probably remain the case until those teams do whatever they do.

If Ian is waived or dumped and the Spurs don't get a guy like Thomas, there's going to be a meltdown here
