Today is the first wave of layoffs at my work. I'm not certain of my future, but the air around here is thick with apprehension.

I happen to be in a good slot at work with a lot of older guys retiring. If there are any cuts, all they have to do is just not replace a retiree.

Of course, that leaves the rest of us to pick up the slack.

We have an archaic system where you can "bump" down to your old position. I made the first round, so supposedly I'll be sitting pretty for the next round, but I may lose some of my staff. Either way, the way California is being run and past indiscretions included, there could be a 3rd round of cuts.
