San Antonio Spurs 110, Memphis Grizzlies 103: Neal before Zod! Spurs survive
    by Jesse Blanchard
    48 Minutes of

AT&T CENTER–So far as first impressions go, Gary Neal left a of an impressive one tonight, rescuing the San Antonio Spurs from the brink of elimation in his first playoff series. Neal calmly drained a three-pointer from the top of the key as time expired in regulation.

Because of Neal the Spurs will live to see another day, which is a far cry from the impression he left with Manu Ginobili when he first arrived in San Antonio.

“It was mid-September and I was working out and he showed up one day. They told me that this was the new shooter,” Manu Ginobili said. “I’m not lying when I say that I saw him miss the first 20 shots he took. We were playing open gym and he was shooting confidently, but he wasn’t making one.

“Then he got used to playing with us and started feeling slowly that he belonged. And then he started showing us what he’s shown all season long. That was my first impression of him.”

Confidence has rarely been an issue with Neal–who ended a summer league game with a three-pointer in similar fashion–and it took little time for his teammates to find their confidence in him. Neal burst on the scene with the real team for the first time in Mexico City, where the same Manu Ginobili that watched him miss 20 consecutive shots diagrammed a game-winning three-pointer specifically for Neal.

How the Spurs nearly gave everything away
    by Timothy Varner
    48 Minutes of

It’s difficult to imagine anyone demurring the game you just watched—the Spurs’ 110-103 OT defeat of the Memphis Grizzlies—as anything less than spectacular. The game, quite literally, pitted the San Antonio Spurs against history. And not simply the history that is this season—that was merely a subplot in the foreground—but against the big backdrop of history that began in 1999 and continues to the present. The 2011 playoffs are no longer about the San Antonio Spurs’ season. That would be too easy. The Spurs’ postseason play is now, perhaps inescapably, measured against an era. All eras must end.

But the Spurs nearly gave it away tonight; the Spurs flirted with that final jot of punctuation that will, eventually, close the book on something we’ve yet to fully appreciate. But we’re not there yet. And the Spurs narrowly escaped the undoing of themselves.

The Spurs, as you know, jumped out to an early lead. In the first half they were up as many as 16 points, but left for halftime with a meager 8 point advantage. The Grizzlies played a much better second half, and it seems the Spurs’ season would come to an end on the strength of Memphis’ third quarter, which they won 26-15. When the game shifted during the third, San Antonio’s postseason hopes appeared doomed. The end was near.

Doing the best he can given the task. Z-Bo got a jumper off on him to put the game up to 5 late in the 4th but he's done that to everyone in this series. He's competing from what I see as the Grizz bigs are going to get theirs, the most important thing to do is to rebound and he's done a good job of tipping and securing those. Imo, he gets a little lost when Memphis runs the PnR and is having a hard time contesting but hopefully he becomes more fluid as the the series rolls on.

This series would be sooooo much easier if we got something out of jefferson and bonner. These two clowns with their 5 pt. games don't do much to help out.

Has Jefferson laid the ball in the hole even once this series? Considering he's the most athletic guy on the court, that is pathetic.

Rewatching the Manu near-3 from last night. Seen him make at least a half dozen tougher shots in practice. Dude would kill at H-O-R-S-E.

Last night marked 1st time in club history Spurs staved off elimination by winning a game in overtime.
