tail of flu, HIV drugs appears to help fight coronavirus: Thai doctors

"This is not the cure, but the patient's condition has vastly improved. From testing positive for 10 days under our care, after applying this combination of medicine the test result became negative within 48 hours," Dr. Kriangska Atipornwanich, a lung specialist at Rajavithi, told reporters.

I don't trust scientific news out of 3rd world countries. They apply liberal amounts of confirmation bias along with flat out lying to avoid being either dismissed or shot.

The reported numbers in China are a joke...

NYT: Coronavirus Pummels Wuhan, a City Short of Supplies and Overwhelmed

doctors say there is a shortage of testing kits and other medical supplies
long lines outside hospitals for testing and treatment suggest that the outbreak is spreading far beyond the official count of cases.
Ambulances, too, are hard to come by, residents say. In recent days, some say they have called 120, China’s equivalent of the emergency number 911, only to be told that there were already hundreds of people in the queue.
“The situation that we’ve seen is much worse than what has been officially reported,” Long Jian, 32, said outside a hospital where his elderly father was being treated. Mr. Long said his father had to go to six hospitals and wait seven days before he could even be tested for the coronavirus. (...) “In our neighborhood, many who weren’t able to get diagnosed ended up dying at home.”
Definitely some underreporting going on in mainland China.

China to allow in U.S. health experts as virus shows no sign of slowing

The WHO last week declared the flu-like virus a global emergency. It has spread to 23 other countries and regions. The Philippines reported the first coronavirus death outside of China.

Airlines around the world have stopped flights to parts of China.

Washington has “unceasingly manufactured and spread panic,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told reporters, noting that

the WHO had advised against trade and travel curbs.

Corona beer has nothing to do with the virus, but that hasn’t stopped the one-liners

The coronavirus has nothing to do with Corona beer, of course, but Google searches for “coronavirus beer” and “beer virus” have nonetheless ed in recent days, according to Google Trends.

“Some say they are not going to get the coronavirus because they drink Sam Adams or o’s [vodka],” she said.

This Chinese doctor tried to save lives, but was silenced. Now he has coronavirus
    https://www.cnn.com/2020/02/03/asia/...hnk/index.html

On December 30, Li Wenliang dropped a bombs in his medical school alumni group on the popular Chinese messaging app WeChat: seven patients from a local seafood market had been diagnosed with an illness similar to severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and quarantined in his hospital.

"I only wanted to remind my university classmates to be careful," Li said.

But within hours, screenshots of his messages -- containing his name -- went viral. Soon after, Li became one of several whistleblower medics targeted by Wuhan police.

Here's a look at how things unfolded:

December 30: Li Wenliang sends the warning message to his former classmates. That same day, the Wuhan Municipal Health Commission warned the city's medical ins utions of an "unknown pneumonia" linked to a seafood market.
December 31: Wuhan's health authorities discuss the outbreak in an emergency meeting, and alert the World Health Organization. Li is summoned by officials to explain how he knew about the cases.
January 3: Li is reprimanded by police for "spreading rumors online" and "severely disrupting social order," and asked to sign a statement promising not to commit further "unlawful acts."
January 10: Li begins coughing and develops a fever after unwittingly treating a patient with the Wuhan coronavirus.
January 28: China's Supreme Court criticizes Wuhan police for punishing the "rumormongers." The next day, Wuhan police issued a statement saying the targeted people had only committed "particularly minor" misdemeanors.
February 1: Li tests positive for coronavirus.

This is with reported #s. We all know China is hiding things with their mishandling of cases in Wuhan and overcrowded hospitals/exhausted medical workers.

    https://www.cnn.com/asia/live-news/c...hnk/index.html

Two additional flights from Wuhan will land in Texas and Nebraska

From CNN Health’s Michael Nedelman & Ben Tinker

On Wednesday morning, two flights carrying passengers from Wuhan, China -- the epicenter of the Wuhan coronavirus outbreak -- arrived at Travis Air Force Base near Sacramento, California.

After refueling, one of these planes is now en route to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego, California, and is expected to land shortly.

Later this week, two additional flights are scheduled to land in the United States, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. One will arrive at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas; the other at Eppley Airfield in Omaha, Nebraska.

Coronavirus whistleblower doctor died from the virus:

    https://www.cnn.com/asia/live-news/c...hnk/index.html

Dr. Li Wenliang — the Chinese whistleblower doctor who warned the public of a potential "SARS-like" disease in December 2019 — has died of coronavirus in Wuhan today, according to several state media reports.

Li was questioned by local health authority, and was later summoned by Wuhan police to sign a reprimand letter in which he was accused of "spreading rumors online" and "severely disrupting social order."

He was hospitalized on Jan. 12 after contracted the virus from his patient, and he was confirmed to have the coronavirus on Feb. 1.

The World Heath Organization tweeted about his death:

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Dr Li Wenliang. We all need to celebrate work that he did on #2019nCoV - DRMikeRyan

Chinese ambassador slams global reaction to coronavirus as a "panicked overreaction"

    From Lindsay Isaac, CNN London

China's ambassador to the UK has called the global reaction to the coronavirus epidemic an “overreaction” and criticized the media for a “bias” against China.

Speaking in London, Liu Xiaoming called for a “reasonable response” and accused people of “discrimination” in targeting the Chinese community.

He praised China’s response to the epidemic which he said went above and beyond World Health Organization regulations. Liu called for respect for the country and its response to the epidemic.

Liu downplayed the outbreak by comparing it to the flu in the US, and said China is ”fully confident” in beating the virus, dismissing its negative effects on the country’s economy as “temporary.”

He may be right. As the sample size continues to get larger the mortality rate has steadily declined. Quite a ways to go before it's comparable to just another flu but it heading in the right direction for now.
