NATO already was bordering Russia (Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia). none of them ever facilitated a NATO invasion of Russia.
joining NATO is the best bet at avoiding armed conflict with Russia, and vice versa. Ukraine wasnt in NATO and Russia invaded them anyway. russia's entire objective is to create as big an empire as they can, either with puppet states like belarus, outright conqueset (crimea), or something in between like Georgia or Syria. they push every boundary they can until they run up against NATO.
